Sartoris, Bayard, III: (March 16, 1893-June 5, 1920) The twin brother of John Sartoris, III, and son of John and Lucy Cranston Sartoris, and grandson of "Colonel" or "Old" Bayard.
During the postwar years, Sartoris grew in stature as a politician and businessman, building a railroad and when that was completed in 1876, he ran for the state Legislature, defeating his former business partner, B.J. Redmond, who in a final act of desperation stemming from years of rivalry decides to kill Sartoris.

SparkNotes: The Unvanquished: Analysis of Major Characters
Colonel Sartoris is onstage at relatively infrequent intervals—he is usually away at war, and makes a brief appearance in several chapters and none at all in others; only in "Skirmish at Sartoris" and "Retreat" does he have an extensive role.
If Colonel Sartoris were the narrator or the protagonist, his larger-than-life qualities would overpower the book and make it cartoonish; through the eyes of a boy and in small doses, his presence gives the war majesty and grandeur.
Her defeat in "Skirmish at Sartoris" is one of the most honestly heartfelt in the book, and an effective indictment of the hollowness of the old social (as distinct from the moral) order.

 SparkNotes: The Unvanquished: Character List
Colonel Sartoris commands his own regiment on the Virginia front until he is demoted by his troops so he can return home to care for his family; even then, he raises an "irregular" brigade who terrorize the far more numerous Yankees in Mississippi with their dashing assaults.
Eventually, she is pressured into marrying Colonel Sartoris after living with him on the front as a common soldier.
Grumby is the opposite of Colonel Sartoris: he preys on the local population rather than protecting them, and kills a defenseless old woman rather than fighting against the Yankees.

 Mimsy Review: Sartoris
This is a grand tale, moving from light to darkness, of Narcissa Benbow and Bayard Sartoris, starting in the midst of the first World War but traversing at times all the way back to the War Between the States.
The lynchpin of the story is Simon, the Sartoris’ fl buggy driver (for the Sartoris’ continued using the horse and buggy while the rest of the county moved to the automobile) and butler.
“Sartoris” is the first salvo of an epic tale of two families, and is grand in its own right.

CliffsNotes::Faulkner's Short Stories:Book Summary and Study Guide
The aristocracy of Yoknapatawpha County is represented by Colonel John Sartoris and his family, the General Jason Compson family, Major de Spain, and the Griersons.
He returns to Yoknapatawpha County and organizes his own troop of “irregulars.” As the leader of this troop, he becomes somewhat of an instant legend; he seems to be always in the local vicinity or in the neighboring land, protecting the women and children left defenseless while their menfolk are off fighting.
Supremely self-assured and exuding confidence in everything he does, the absolute and undeviating loyalty that Sartoris inspires among the men in his regiment attests to his ability to lead with authority and respect.

Mrs. Sartoris by Elke Schmitter « Book Review « ReadySteadyBook - a literary site
Elke Schmitter's compelling, if bleak, novel Mrs Sartoris was a huge best-seller in Germany and it is easy to see why.
Readable in one sitting, Mrs Sartoris is the heroine's first-person tale of her past life and loves, the disappointment that clouds her marriage, and the unbridgeable gap that threatens the relationship with her teenage daughter.
Interspersed with the very careful, ranging, almost stream-of-consciousness narrative concerning her first, passionate love with the socially unavailable Philip, and her current, intense affair that has awakened long dormant desires, are small, disconcerting chapters about an unnamed pedestrian being (deliberately?) run over.

John Sartoris is a damn fool; they voted him out of his own private regiment in kindness, so he could come home and take care of his family, knowing that if he didn’t wouldn’t nobody around here be likely to.
