Sarus cranes are beautiful regal birds, inhabiting open country and often assembling in huge flocks.
In the spring of 1982 a sprinkler system was installed in the sarus crane enclosure to ensure that whatever the weather the ground would be soft and brimming with insect life for the young cranes to eat.
The sarus cranes at Marwell are kept in a roofless enclosure and so the youngsters are pinioned before they are old enough to fly.
