Sasebo has been an important naval base since 1889, when the Sasebo Naval Station began operations on July 1st as headquarters for the Imperial Japanese Navy’s Third Naval District.
On September 22, 1945, the 5th Marine Division landed at Sasebo, and in June 1946, U.S. Fleet Activities Sasebo was formally established.

SASEBO, Japan (NNS) -- The Fleet Activities Sasebo (CFAS), Japan, community came together Sept. 11 to demonstrate heartfelt appreciation for one of its most dynamic volunteer groups — its command ombudsmen.
The Ombudsman Appreciation Luncheon at CFAS’ Harbor View Club celebrated the tireless efforts of the Sasebo community’s ombudsmen to represent their commands and serve as the primary link between those commands and their family members.
Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC) FFSC Director Cathy Stokoe, who oversees all FFSCs in the Department of the Navy, was the luncheon’s guest speaker, and had high praise for Sasebo’s ombudsman programs, which support the Forward Deployed Naval Forces (FDNF) based in the southern Japanese island of Kyushu.
