Sashimono - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sashimono (指物, 差物, 挿物) were small banners worn by Japanese medieval soldiers for identification during battles.
The sashimono are usually fitted to the backs of common soldiers, known as ashigaru, to elite samurai, and in special holders on the horses of some cavalry soldiers.
The designs on sashimono were usually very simple geometric shapes, sometimes accompanied by Japanese characters providing the name of the leader or clan, the clan's mon, or a clan's slogan.

 Samurai "Sashimono" Battle Flag
Most Sashimono consisted of a small flag similar to a nobori which was made rigid with two poles threaded through the cloth.
The flag was flown from a lacquered wooden shaft securely fastened to the back of the armour, and held in place by a cord that passed under the armpits and was tied onto metal rings on the Samurai's do.
The Sashimono would often bear the Daimyo's mon, giving uniformity to the whole army with different units distinguished by the background colour or field of the flag.

The fobs are stitched in the correct series of cross, grids and star patterns as was standard for most flag type sashimono hata, with the arrangement and pattern of these stitched designs being almost universal practiced.
Still the flag is a very honest and rare example of a sashimono which may re-date my estimate, but since it is difficult to determine such facts without further specific references we have dated the item conservatively.
This particular flag is a fine representation of a sashimono hata as would be worn affixed to a pole with an independant upper cross arm on a swivel.

Sashimono not being on all the army huh...
In another book of his, "Samurai Warfare" he states that sashimono were essential because armour production became so mainstream that it was hard to identify one's army in the field....Just discard that notion.
Not all warriors wore sashimono, but all wore some mean of identification, like the shoulder or helmet-'tags', like turnbull states in the sourced book, it was initially the common mean of identification for ashigaru.

A sashimono is the flag that is mounted on the back of your armor.
Tie the base of the sashimono to the lacing cords at the top of your kusa-zuri in the very center of your armor's backplate.
Make sure that when the sashimono is pulled away from the armor, there is no more than 4-5 inches between the knot and the backplate.

Reptus Sashimono - Reaper Message Board
I want something different for my Reptus standard bearers so I came up with the idea of straping a Sashimono to their backs.
This will stick with their oriental/asian feel, and will look great when their totem of battle is on the field.
A sashimono is a battle flag that a samurai straps on their back, apparently it was used for a primary source of identification among troops, sometimes each soldiers was different, but I'm going to bend the rules and use them for Troop moral.

Quite possibly his follower's sashimono (back banner) were similar to his uma jirushi.
However, this sashimono is found in the Obata museum.
I do not know the caption the item has; Turnbull (The samurai source book) states: "He (Masamori) is also credited with a mon of a bamboo design on an uchiwa fan shape, and a leaf-shaped mon appears on a suit of armour and a jinbaori he is known to have owned".

 Osprey - Samurai heraldry
The most prominent motif is his mon of a swastika, which appears in red on the jingasa helmets and breastplates of the lowly ashigaru, and in gold upon the red sashimono of the samurai.
The o uma jirushi uses different religious symbolism: a huge, gold-lacquered, three- dimensional shakujo, the metal-ringed rattle used by the itinerant members of a mountain-based Buddhist sect to drive wild animals away during their pilgrimages through the high country.
The heavy standard is socketed and tied to the back of a strong soldier and steadied by extra ropes; note the double red sashimono of the rope men.

 Sashimono (little banner)
The banner was fixed to the back of the armour by a waist line socket and a hinged bridge-piece with a ring at shoulder level of the armour.
While this arrangement for fixing was common there were hundreds of styles of Sashimono normally of silk with leather corners.
They were normally oblong in shape, although when the banner carried a crest or family name then its front had to have tabs on its edge through which the staff passed on its left side.

ya, the sashimono was pretty impractical in combat and was mostly used for recognition on the battle field, but most samurai would have a 'squire' to remove to in certain situations like duels etc. Perhaps ill incorporate its removal in the functions of the inquisitors lex-servo aswell....
