Riversdale Village, incorporated in 1905, was one of three founding communities of Saskatoon.
Although Riversdale was separated from the downtown by the Canadian National Railway tracks, pedestrian access was maintained by an overhead walkway at 20th Street, and vehicular access by subways on 19th and 23rd Streets.
Riversdale would no longer be separated from the larger downtown business district by the artificial barrier of railway yards and tracks.

Saskatoon is reputed to be the "Paris of the prairies," a title which likely originated in the song "Wheat Kings" by The Tragically Hip, a prominent Canadian rock band.
In 1901, Saskatoon's population hit 113 and the community on the west bank of the river adopted the name "Saskatoon", while residents on the east side of the river adopted the name "Nutana".

Saskatoon, a commercial and educational centre in the Province of Saskatchewan, is situated on the banks of the South Saskatchewan River in Townships 36 and 37, Range 5 and Township 36, Range 6, West of Third Meridian.
By 1899 Saskatoon consisted of a few houses on the east side of the river and on the west side was the station house, the section foreman’s house, the Mounted Police barracks, a stone building, a hotel and about six other houses and shacks.
Saskatoon firefighters Victor James Budz and Dennis Aron Guenter were killed while fighting a fire in the basement of the Queen's Hotel on 1st Avenue South.

Located just south west of downtown, Riversdale is when of the heavier populated areas for its size.
The luxury of the neighbourhood is the proximity to downtown (within walking distance), near to major venues and the Saskatoon Hospital, but with that comes the disadvantage of lack of convenient parking spots.
The shopping is excellent and convenient, with many interesting shops and boutiques in the neighbourhood and with Saskatoon's largest two level mall (Midtown Plaza) within walking distance.

None of the five candidates vying to become Saskatoon Riversdale's new MLA voted for themselves in Monday's byelection.
Returning officer Kay Burkhart said in an interview Monday all candidates were ineligible to vote because they weren't residents of the Riversdale constituency on Feb. 19, the day the writ was dropped.
No candidate was "ordinarily a resident" of Riversdale on Feb. 19, Burkhart said.
