Secunda - The team investigating the Sasol blast in Secunda heard on Friday that 600 contract workers, who were at the plant at the time, were insufficiently trained and poorly paid.
Sasol alleges an employee of Noan - a contractor who works for Sasol - worked on the pipe without the necessary work permit.
He said a Sasol employee assured the worker that a permit had been issued for the replacement of the measuring plate.

Sasol could build two plants in China that would each use up to 19 million tonnes of coal a year to make 80,000 barrels per day of fuel, made up of two thirds diesel and 34% naptha and liquid petroleum gas.
This is separate from the announcement in May 2004 when Sasol and Eyesizwe, the largest empowered coal miner, signed a memorandum of understanding, covering areas of possible cooperation.

Lying in the Highveld coalfield, east of Johannesburg, the mine was opened in 1980 to produce coal for Sasol’s Secunda synthesis plant, and since 1995 has been a three-shaft complex producing low-ash steam coal for the export market as well as a middlings product for Sasol feed.
Sasol plans to replace this operation with a new mine, although its policy of using increasing amounts of natural gas imported from Mozambique as a feedstock for its synfuels plants will mean that its demand for coal will be correspondingly reduced.
Coarse coal is washed for export using a bank of 18,800mm-diameter, gravity-feed, dense-medium cyclones, with finer material forming feed for the Sasol conversion plant and its on-site power station.
