Satcom (satellite) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Satcom was one of the first geostationary satellites.
Satcom was the first satellite used by broadcast TV networks in the United States, like ABC, NBC, and CBS, to distribute their programming to all of their local affiliate stations.
The reason that Satcom 1 was so widely used is that it had twice the communications capacity of the competing Westar 1 (24 transponders as opposed to Westar 1’s 12), which resulted in lower transponder usage costs.

Broadband Wide Area Networking via IP/ATM over SATCOM
In this article the wide area coverage of SATCOM is coupled with the broadcast and multicast capabilities of asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) to facilitate the implementation of a WAN with a high-rate forward link and a low-rate return.
In this article the capacity is evaluated for fixed SATCOM access rates and compared to the average capacity assuming variable access rates, modeled by a geometric distribution, with a mean access rate equal to the given fixed rate.
From a SATCOM perspective, the efficiency of ATM lies in its ability to flexibly allocate capacity and, potentially, on the manner in which multicasting and priority queuing are exploited.
