However, because the satellite record does disagree with the temperature trends seen in the surface record, the satellite data have been widely covered by the popular press and discussed in policy circles.
The satellite record indicates warming in the upper troposphere (a region extending from approximately five to eight miles above the Earth's surface), but a slight cooling trend in the lower troposphere and a rather large cooling trend in the lower stratosphere.
Spencer and Christy remain confident of the satellite record's integrity, and argue that sufficient temporal overlap of instruments occurs during satellite transitions.

Difficulties in Obtaining Reliable Temperature Trends   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-14)
Tropical radiosonde records are of limited use in resolving the discrepancies because of artificial trends arising from changes in instruments or sensors; however, comparisons with Australian radiosondes show a spurious downward jump in MSU 2R in mid 1991 which is not evident in MSU 2.
As described in Section 2, global tropospheric temperature anomalies tend to be larger than surface anomalies during ENSO events, and the much colder anomalies in the satellite record during 1992 and 1993 occur in part from the smaller effect of the Mt. Pinatubo eruption (June 1991) at the surface (Jones 1994).
Radiosonde records almost universally contain temporal inhomogeneities arising from changes in instruments or sensors during the period of interest and are therefore of limited usefulness in resolving the discrepancies, especially throughout the tropics.

Climate Data Records: From Environmental Satellites workshop were all very clear in stating that without some form of compensation, NOAA will not be able to attract the best scientists for the advisory council, which in turn could limit the success of the program.
Satellite sensors must have a thorough prelaunch characterization and the ability to measure important instrument properties on orbit, including the ability to calibrate the sensor after launch.
Climate Data Records: From Environmental Satellites It is essential that a period of overlap between successive sensors be incorporated into launch schedules to assess and correct for differences between sensors, thus assuring continuity of the long-term climate records.

USGCRP Seminar: The Satellite Temperature Records: Parts 1 and 2
A record that is now more than 17 years long has been created by merging data from nine different MSUs, each with peculiarities (e.g., time drift of the spacecraft relative to the local solar time) that must be calculated and removed because they can have substantial impacts on the resulting trend.
The temperature record since that time suggests an overall warming of 0.3 to 0.6°C from the 1860s to the 1990s, with the early decades of this century being slightly cooler than in the mid-19th century and with a secondary maximum of temperatures (compared to the 1990s) in the decades around 1940.
Proxy records derived from tree rings, ice cores, and other indirect measures, combined with the thermometer record, suggest that the most recent decades are the warmest period since at least 1400 AD, and perhaps as far back as the last interglacial about 80,000 years ago.

As residents of the Upper Midwest cope with the aftermath of devastating floods brought on by the melting of record amounts of snowfall this winter, climatological data from a variety of independent sources continue to belie predictions of a feared warming of the Earth's temperature.
Of particular concern to climatologists were satellite readings, generally considered the most accurate way of measuring the Earth's temperatures.
Satellite readings taken over the last 18 years actually show a slight cooling of the Earth's mean temperature.

Arctic sea ice continues decline as temperatures rise
New satellite records monitored by a national team of collaborators show a four-year pattern of extremely low summer sea-ice coverage in the Arctic that continued in September 2005, which may be the result of warming temperatures and earlier spring melting.
The research group used the satellite record -- dating back to 1978 -- to determine that the 2005 spring and summer melting began about 17 days earlier than usual, a new record.
The conditions were followed by the lowest sea-ice extent yet seen in the satellite data, a five-day mean average of 2.06 million square miles on Sept. 19.

Originally called Satellite Records, Stax Records was an independent label created in 1958 by Jim Stewart and his older sister Estelle Axton.
Stax (at this time still known as Satellite Records) recorded and released its first single off the label in the summer of 1958 in an old storehouse that Jim had turned into a makeshift recording studio using an Ampex Monaural recorder in Brunswick, Tennessee.
The signature soul that came out of the Stax Records studios in Memphis, Muscle Shoals and Macon was much more spontaneous, uninhibited, and raw that the music of Motown, and when it did make a visible impression on the music scene at that time, it was on Billboard’s Rhythm and Blues Top 40.

Inferred from the record (MSU-2R) of radiance measurements by the satellite Microwave Sounder Unit (MSU)
Accordingly, the satellite record has been widely cited by sceptics as evidence against global warming
The comparisons, focused on the tropics where atmospheric temperatures are closely tied to SSTs, strongly suggest that two spurious downward jumps occur in the MSU-2R record coinciding with changes in satellites, and that the real trend in MSU temperatures is likely to be positive, albeit small.
