Satish Dhawan (25 September 1920–3 January 2002) was born in Srinagar, India and was educated in India and the United States.
Satish Dhawan was born on September 25, 1920, in Srinagar.
Dhawan met the Prime Minister and agreed to head the space programme but on two conditions - that he be allowed to continue as the Director of the IISc and that the headquarters of the space programme be in Bangalore.

 A pioneer scientist
Dhawan was appointed Chairman of the Space Commission and of the Indian Space Research Organisation, and Secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Space.
Dhawan had devoted to the issues were summarised by him the next morning with graphs he himself had prepared, bringing out a space mission profile for the next 15 years (1980-1995).
Dhawan came to the Institute in 1951 - a fresh Ph.D. from Caltech, renowned for its scientific and technological leadership in the aerospace field under the legendary von Karman - he was immediately a star.

Satish Dhawan, who was director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), chairman of the Indian Space Commission and the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO), and president of the Indian Academy of Sciences, received his engineering degree from Caltech in 1949, his PhD in aeronautics in 1951, and a Distinguished Alumni Award in 1969.
Satish was immediately accepted and respected by this highly competent and proud group of young scien-tists.
Finally bureaucracy inter-vened, and Satish had to re-turn to India in such a hurry that he could not even finish the introduction to this thesis, which, like any good researcher, he had left to be done last.

 A visionary scientist
Dhawan was the unanimous choice of a selection committee that comprised R. Choksi (the then Chairman of the Council of the Institute), S. Hussain Zaheer (Director-General, CSIR), V.R. Khanolkar (Vice-Chancellor, Bombay University) and two nominees of the Council, H.J. Bhabha and Bhagavantam.
Dhawan told the caller to tell the Prime Minister that he was on a sabbatical and, moreover, teaching a course and that he would be able to return only after finishing that.
Dhawan's management philosophy was that when success comes in after hard work, the leader should give the credit of the success to the team members.

 SRMC tie up with SHAR to provide staff, family medical aid
The Satish Dhawan Space Centre at Sriharikota and Sri Ramachandra Medical Centre (SRMC) have joined hands to provide medical services to the staff and family members of the Department of Space at SHAR.
Under the agreement, SRMC would manage the Satish Dhawan Memorial Hospital (SDMH), built by the Department of Space, involving an investment of about Rs eight crore at Sulurpet in Andhra Pradesh.
