 Tiger Mask
Satoru Sayama was born on November 24, 1957, in Yamaguchi, Japan.
Sayama gradually worked his way through New Japan’s junior heavyweight ranks; and on November 14, 1977, Inoki sent him to compete in a mixed martial arts show at Nippon Budokan, where he suffered a crushing defeat to Mark Costero.
With Sayama gone, All Japan owner Giant Baba purchased the rights to the character; and he later unveiled a young Mitsuharu Misawa as the first of several Tiger Mask reincarnations (though none possessed the ingenuity or creativeness of the original).

Universal Wrestling Federation (Japan) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soon, however, they were joined by Yoshiaki Fujiwara, Nobuhiko Takada, Satoru Sayama (the original Tiger Mask) and Kazuo Yamazaki, and this changed the orientation of the UWF's wrestling from the traditional style to a more martial arts oriented style.
Maeda, Fujiwara, Takada, Sayama and Yamazaki had been martial artists before joining New Japan Pro Wrestling, and they began incorporating realistic moves, including submission holds and kickboxing-style kicks, which created a new form of puroresu called shoot-style.
Sayama, embittered with puroresu after this match, left the UWF and was not heard from again in the puroresu world for 11 years.

Satoru Sayama (as Tiger Mask) only wrestled in New Japan for two years before hanging up the mask.
For starters, Satoru Sayama had a passion for "shoot" wrestling, which is what he did for the next few years after his retirement as Tiger Mask.
Satoru Sayama didn't show the passion to keep up the high bar that he had set for himself, which is unfortunate, since there was no one else that had the ability to "wow" the crowd then Tiger Mask.

For me, in wrestling that would be Satoru Sayama and Jaguar Yokota, as they were of the charts performers who were WAY ahead of their time and had the most influence on shaping the style of today's wrestling that I like the best.
Before Sayama became Tiger Mask in 1981, one of the main places he worked was Mexico, working for EMLL from 1978-1980.
It was interesting that during the match, Satanico did the rudo ploy where he offers a hand shake only to try to kick his opponent, but after the match Sayama offered a handshake and they shook hands, showing good will and apparently ending their longstanding rivalry.

Satoru Sayama then wrote a book called "Kayfabe" where he said some controversial things about the wrestling business (Hisaharu Tanabe also said that he "verbally disgraced the great sport of Puroresu.").
I always understood that Sayama left NJPW because he was disillusioned with the Wrestling business - hence the fact that he surfaced in the shoot-style UWF, and has pushed towards the MMA/Wrestling fusion in his out of ring career.
