It was formerly held on January 15, which was the old date for celebrating the start of the new year, but lately it has been timed to coincide with the spring equinox.
Also down south in Kyushu, in Satsumasendai, Kagoshima Prefecture, residents held for the second time a new festival in which a local traditional dance is performed on the grounds of a Shinto shrine, where the plum trees are in full bloom.
The people in the city decided to recreate the dance and hold the festival as a way to promote the traditional arts and present the natural beauty of the area.
