I have many friends who also surf (and some who are learning, like I am), and we love cruising around to different surfing spots, checking the conditions, and running out into the ocean like little kids after the ice cream truck when we spot a good set of waves rolling in.
Kagoshima is located at the very southern tip of Kyushu, the country's southernmost island.
The city I live in is called Satsumasendai, and it's fairly large (geographically speaking), but not that populated.

As of May 1, 2006, the city had an estimated population of 103,478 in a total area of 683.50 km².
October 12, 2004 - The city was estblished when the city of Sendai, the towns of Hiwaki, Iriki, Kedoin and Togo, and Koshikijima Islands (which consisted of Sato, Kamikoshiki, Shimokoshiki, and Kashima villages) merged to form one new city.

Kagoshima is bordered by the Pacific Ocean and the East China Sea and by Kumamoto and Miyazaki Prefectures.
Kagoshima was bombarded by the British Royal Navy in 1863 to punish the Satsuma daimyo for the murder of Charles Richardson on the Tōkaidō highway the previous year, and the refusal to pay an indemnity in compensation.
Kagoshima was the birthplace and scene of the last stand of Saigo Takamori, a legendary figure in Meiji Japan in 1877 at the end of the Satsuma Rebellion (Seinan Senso).
