Saturday Night Live is a late-night sketch comedy series which permiered on NBC on October 11, 1975, and introduced a number of new comics and distinctive, recurring characters, much like Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In years later, but with a different sensibility.
The book Live From New York by TV critic Tom Shales details the backstage conflict between the writers of the show, who resisted integrating the Muppets into the show during the first year, and the Muppet performers.

Saturday Night Live logo (2004 Season) Saturday Night Live ('''SNL''') is a weekly late-night ninety-minute live comedy-variety show which has been broadcasted virtually every Saturday night on the American NBC network since its debut on October 11, 1975.
It is followed by a segue into the opening credits, which usually open with a shot of the Statue of Liberty.
Some live shows may also be altered and edited for the west coast; in some cases recordings of sketches or performances from the program's dress rehearsal have been substituted for the later feed.

Originally, the show was called NBC's Saturday Night until NBC retitled its show in 1976 (the Saturday Night Live title having been previously attached to a short-lived variety show hosted by Howard Cosell and airing on rival network ABC).
John Belushi was credited in the opening montage of the Christopher Lee/Meat Loaf episode as Kevin Scott, a continuing gag from the non-live opening, where he was supposedly "moving up" from SNL to star as Grizzly Adams on the NBC program of the same name.
The original live broadcast ran long, and by the time the last sketch ended and the two minute final internal station break began, there was exactly 2 minutes left until the scheduled programme end.

Like all things associated with Saturday Night Live, Presidential Bash 2000 is uneven, but the bits included are generally quite funny, and some of the satire was so prescient that the passing of time makes it even better.

The Saturday Night Live commercial is usually a spoof of a real commercial found on television at that time, and is commonly shown after the host's opening monologue.

The clever writers at ''Saturday Night Live'' found a way to get Janet Jackson to make fun of her Super Bowl ''wardrobe malfunction'' without actually making fun of herself.
In Saturday's opening sketch, host and musical guest Jackson portrayed National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice, about to testify at last week's 9/11 hearings, and encouraged by Vice President Dick Cheney (Darrell Hammond), to ''flash a boob'' to distract attention from the political grilling.
A flustered Rice replies that the hearing is an inappropriate forum for such lewd behavior, unlike, say, ''national sporting championships.'' Nonetheless, under fire at the hearing, Rice pops out a breast, heavily pixelated by NBC cameras.
