	Satyricon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Satyricon (or Satyrica; fuller title in Latin, Petronii Arbitri Satyricon libri) is a Latin novel, usually believed to have been written by Gaius Petronius who was the emperor Nero's arbiter elegantiae or fashion adviser.
		The name Satyricon implies that it belongs to the type to which Varro, imitating the Greek Menippus, had given the character of a medley of prose and verse composition.
		Walter K. Kelly, 1854, in the volume Erotica: The elegies of Propertius, The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter, and The Kisses of Johannes Secundus.

		Gaius Petronius (~27-66 A.D.), the author of the Satyricon, was the emperor Nero's advisor in matters of luxury and extravagance (his unofficial title was arbiter elegantiae).
		The Satyricon is set in Campania, which is the region around Naples and Mt. Vesuvius, in the middle of Italy.
		The advantage of this setting for us, paradoxically, is the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Two nearby towns, Pompeii and Herculaneum, were completely destroyed but in such a way that an unusual number of antiquities of this date were preserved by being covered with ash or mud.

		Still, "Satyricon," for all its failings, is the work of an original, a real filmmaker, someone who answers to no standards other than his own.
		Such efforts to expand on SATYRICON were merely more explicit and less interesting than the original, and I do not really recommend them--nor do I really recommend SATYRICON for any one other than Fellini fans, for with its oddly disjointed feel it is unlikely to please those raised on mainstream.
		In any case, if you haven't seen Satyricon and you're the kind of person who can stomach the extreme limits of hedonism, you are in for an experience you can only have once in your life for once seen you will then be there and no longer have luxury of that voyeuristic POV.

	Fellini's Satyricon
		After seeing Fellini's Satyricon about 25 years ago, I got to wondering about the original book by Petronius, purportedly translated by Oscar Wilde.
		I recall that the book was so enjoyable that I read it twice.
		I liked the movie, especially the creepy music.
