 Satyricon: Black Metal from Norway
All aspects of the band’s presentation have undergone this shift, from the music and lyrics to the visual display, to reflect a grimness of life as lived by disgusting demons under the guise of humans rather than the ancient warrior spirit Satyricon were previously enamored with.
The greatest offender here however, is the band’s inability to maintain consistency over the course of a single song, something that has plagued this act from the beginning and seems to be suffering from even more carelessness and lack of vision.
Satyricon have always been a frustrating proposition what with their inconsistency and dubious sentiments, but Volcano finds this band utterly lost in a search for clear focus of intent and purpose of being.

I guess that's because if you're a metal band (*especially* a fl, power or doom metal band), and you happen to be able to come up with a great album (like SATYRICON did with "Nemesis Divina"), you'd better always and forever release the exact same type of music.
And while I've enjoyed their earliest albums, back when SATYRICON were just Satyr and Frost ("Nemesis Divina" is a masterpiece), I've also enjoyed their latest output (I think that "K.I.N.G." is a great song).

Never a band to reiterate the obvious, the Oslo-based two-piece of Frost (drums) and Satyr (vocals, all other instruments) has made a remarkable career out of shaping the true core of one of the most uncompromising and extreme genres in musical history.
The remarkable thing about this album is that the artistic restrictions Satyricon set for themselves seem very similar to those that apply to generic rock music a catchy hookline, clock set to a certain number of beats per minute...
The framework the band worked in imposed a new precision and compactness to their music that immediately stimulates the dark emotional center of the brain: It wakes the beast inside, if you will, and as an antithesis to the Holy Grail of rock music this is truly diabolical.
