Sauber's breakthrough came in 1981 when he created a special version of the BMW M1 which was sold to Dieter Quester who ran it at Le Mans.
Sauber had few options since he had a fully equipped and staffed factory and there really was not a lot else to do with them apart from Formula One, if he wished to remain in motor racing at the level he'd become used to.
Naturally, Sauber did not enter F1 at the top, but it came in at the sharp end of the midfield group and performed impressively for a newcomer.

Sauber participated in a number of other racing series before its involvement in Formula One, such as the Swiss and International Sports cars championships and the 24 hours of Le Mans.
Sauber used Ferrari designed engines and gearboxes built by Sauber Petronas Engineering, a company founded for the sole purpose of building these engines, that are nearly identical to the ones used by Ferrari.
In 2001 Sauber brought a virtually unknown and very inexperienced Kimi Räikkönen into Formula One, despite the protests of a few drivers and influential members of the FIA, including Max Mosley, that he would pose a danger to other drivers.

Sauber's motorsport connection, was made ever so slightly unique - in that, racing in his native land had been banned after the Le Mans tragedy of 1955.
In November 1991 Mercedes decided not to be directly involved and so Sauber entered F1 by itself in 1993, with drivers JJ Lehto and Karl Wendlinger and engines built by Ilmor but rebadged as Saubers.
Sauber did convince Mercedes into F1 in 1994 but a year later the German company did a deal with McLaren, leaving Sauber to become the Ford F1 works team.

History: Sauber were formed in 1970 and raced in sports-car, they were backed and financed by Mercedes-Benz who also financed their headquarters at Hinwill Switzerland.
Sauber moved up to f1 in 1993 but although scoring a few points the team did not perform to their expectations.
In 2000 Sauber scored six constructors championship points and finished the season eighth overall, all the teams points were scored by Mika Salo with two fifth and two sixth places.
