Saucer separation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the Star Trek fictional universe, saucer separation is used to describe the procedure whereby the saucer section of certain Starfleet starship types disengages from the stardrive section.
In early drafts of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the USS Enterprise was to separate its saucer section while confronting V'ger, and the separation line indicated in concept art is clearly visible on the connecting dorsal of the finished model, but this scene was scrapped.
Carrying all the non-essential personnel, the saucer section could depart the battle area; meanwhile, the stardrive section (controlled from the battle bridge, an auxiliary command centre in the stardrive section) could engage the enemy with a minimal complement.

Primary hull - Memory Alpha - A Wikia wiki
The primary hull (also known as the saucer section or saucer module on some classes) is a major component of the overall hull structure.
Ships capable of saucer separation were designed for this purpose in order to have the primary hull serve as a lifeboat for the crew in the event of catastrophic damage to the warp core or a loss of antimatter containment.
Saucer sections on some starships, like the Galaxy class, are even equipped to make planetfall and landing, although not all are designed to return to space following a landing.

The saucer section is shaped almost perfectly round, with the height roughly a third of the diameter.
For the saucer section alone, the velocities are warp 3.0, and 4.51 respectively.
The Saucer section emergency nacelles cannot be used during vessel seperation for longer than six hours at cruising speed, and 40 minutes at emergency velocity, for fuel consideration reasons.

Adding the cone section after the top and bottom of the dish were joined was slightly difficult due to the curvature of the dish surface.

At this point you will want to start drilling all of those tiny little holes on the sides of the lower saucer section, the larger holes on the upper and lower section of the saucer section, and the windows that are on the "face" of the upper portion of the saucer.
The placements I chose allow light to shine to the edges of the saucer section (which illuminates the running lights), to the impulse engine domes (both top and bottom), and lastly aft towards the impulse engines, docking lights, aft running lights and the shuttle bay areas.
This is also a good time to place the two halves of the saucer section together to make sure you have plenty of clearance for the bulbs and also to check for any "leaks" where you might have light shining through in places where you don't intend for it to.

Without the bulk of the saucer the stardrive section was much more maneuverable, in theory giving it a significant combat advantage over a saucer-equipped Galaxy.
In practice, however, this operation is somewhat unwieldy on the Galaxy class and leaves the saucer (which does not have an independent warp drive) extremely vulnerable to attack.
The scientific and diplomatic sections were removed in favor of increased armament and power for the weapons.

 Emergency Landing of Saucer Section
Although Starfleet personnel are trained in landing a saucer module it is a maneuver that is rarely performed, not least because of the stresses put upon the saucer section on impact with the planet surface.

Galaxy-class ships have the ability to separate their saucer section from the stardrive section, making them one of the fleet’s most versatile classes.
Saucer separation is generally employed so that the saucer section—which contains most of the crew—can remain in relative safety while the star drive (or battle) section goes into battle or other hazardous situations.
Saucer separation can only be attempted at sub-light speeds and not while the ship is at warp speed.

On the Galaxy Class, saucer separation was intended to allow all non-essential personnel to evacuate to the Saucer Section, which would then separate and be left behind while the Stardrive Section went into a dangerous situation.
Therefore, the saucer section, which on any other Starfleet class is referred to as the Primary Hull, is actually the Tertiary Hull on the Victory, since it's the weakest section.

The saucer could be removed from the surface mostly intact as a relatively new hull capable of at least serving as a test article.
It was then realized that the Enterprise-D saucer, which had been structurally refit to space worthiness over the past eight years and already contained most of the new technology, could be docked with a unfinished stardrive section from another Galaxy that had just been laid down, the last of the original twelve space frames.
