Saufatu Sopoanga is concerned the mid year referendum is being under-sold to the people of Tuvalu as simply a change to the country's head of State.
SOPOANGA: It raises the question of the head of state but the real question is whether the people, the majority people of Tuvalu wants to continue the current government, the model of government or wants to have a change.
SOPOANGA: Most of the older segment of the population would tend to have that sort of view, that they would continue to stay with the Queen, even with the British flag in the Tuvalu flag.

SOPOANGA: "Yes, because they still don't have the numbers, so I'm asking the chap in New Zealand who has improved a lot if he would be able to spare a couple of days to come for this election and we can go back to be able to hold a majority."

Tuvalu Prime Minister Saufatu Sopoanga urged industrialized nations Wednesday to cut greenhouse-gas emissions as soon as possible by shifting to renewable energy sources, fearing his island nation will sink if global warming continues.
Sopoanga said his government does not want to see people leaving Tuvalu, saying they need to protect their homeland as well as preserve their sovereignty, culture and tradition.
Sopoanga was on a seven-day trip to Japan to discuss bilateral ties with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi.

The back story: In the last general election, a group of legislators aligned with Prime Minister Saufatu Sopoanga (Tuvalu doesn't have formal political parties) obtained an 8-7 majority in Parliament.
Armed with that ruling, the opposition gave Sopoanga a last chance to recall Parliament before the governor-general did so for him, and the prime minister has now given in.
The drama isn't over yet, and Sopoanga may have the last laugh; in a country without political parties, it is easy for legislators to switch factions, and Sopoanga has predicted that at least two opposition deputies will cross the floor.
