Saul Chaplin (born February 19, 1912 - died November 15, 1997) was one of Hollywood's preeminent composers and musical directors.
Chaplin worked with and was friends with most of the major songwriters and performers of his era, such as Cole Porter, Ira Gershwin, Al Jolson, Leonard Bernstein, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Phil Silvers, Julie Andrews, Frank Sinatra and others.

In the late 1940s, Chaplin moved to MGM to work on a long string of films including On the Town (1949), Kiss Me, Kate (1953), High Society (1956) and Merry Andrew (1958).
For collaborating on such hits as Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen and Please Be Kind, Chaplin was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1985.
While he still continued composing, Chaplin became a movie producer in the early '60s and was behind such major features as West Side Story (1961), Can-Can (1960), I Could Go On Singing (1963), The Sound of Music (1965), STAR!

aul Chaplin was born Saul Kaplin in Brooklyn, New York on February 19, 1912, and attended New York University's School of Commerce with the intention of becoming an accountant.
When the then-unknown Andrews Sisters recorded Cahn and Chaplin's English version of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" (adapted from a 1933 Yiddish theater song by Sholem Secunda and Jacob Jacobs) in 1937, they had one of the biggest hits of that era, firmly establishing the careers of Chaplin, Cahn, and the Andrews Sisters themselves.
Saul Chaplin died in Los Angeles, California, on November 15, 1997.

During the 1930s Cahn and Saul Chaplin churned out song after song, including "Rhythm Is Our Business," "Until the Real Thing Comes Along," and "Shoe Shine Boy," and were lauded for their arrangement of "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" for the Andrews Sisters.
The earliest is from a 1936 radio show and is titled "Cahn and Chaplin song composition review." There are numerous commercial and noncommercial recordings of songs with lyrics by Cahn, featuring performances by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Dean Martin, and others.

Chaplin, a composer, arranger and producer who worked on 60 motion pictures, died Saturday at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles from injuries he suffered in a fall.
The veteran music man was an associate producer of West Side Story and other films, including Can-Can and The Sound of Music, as well as Oscars telecasts in the early 1970s.

The duo of Cahn and Chaplin soon began to have some success at writing specialty numbers for vaudeville acts, but they could not get their songs published.
The song that made Cahn and Chaplin famous and rich enough for Cahn to buy his parents a new house was the specialty number "Bei Mir Bist Du Schon (Means That You're Grand)." Cahn heard this Yiddish song at the Apollo Theater and thought an English version would work well.
During the late 1930s the team of Cahn and Chaplin wrote under contract for New York City's Vitaphone Studios, a subsidiary of Warner Bros. that produced short feature films.

For Porter, songs such as Begin the Beguine, I Get a Kick Out of You and Anything Goes (one of my favourites) would spotlight a spectacular career, while Chaplin would be remembered for the scores for 1954's Seven Brides for Seven Brothers as well as West Side Story in 1961.
Put these two together with the talents of Louis Armstrong and the vocals of Bing Crosby and Frank Sinatra and you have by default one of the most memorable musicals of all time.
