Saul Cherniack served as a captain in the Intelligence Corps of the Canadian Army in the Second World War.
Cherniack was first elected to the Manitoba Legislature in 1962, was finance minister from 1969 - 1972, and again from 1973 - 1975, when he relinquished the portfolio.
Saul Cherniack, Winnipeg -- former Manitoba MLA and member of the Privy Council of Canada; past president of the Winnipeg Jewish Welfare Fund and past national vice-president of the Canadian Jewish Congress.

Lawrie Cherniack himself was a Winnipeg city councillor at one point and a member of the Winnipeg Jewish Community Council.

Saul Mark Cherniack, PC, CM, OM, QC, LL.B (born January 10, 1917 in Winnipeg, Manitoba) is a Canadian lawyer and politician.
From 1943 to 1946, he served in the Royal Canadian Artillery and then in the Intelligence Corps of the Canadian Army as a Japanese language specialist, reaching the rank of captain.
He retired from his legal practice in 2000.
