Saul Landau - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saul Landau was Director of Digital Media Programs and Hugh O. Bounty Chair of Applied Interdisciplinary Knowledge at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona).
A University of Wisconsin, Madison graduate, Landau donated his papers and films to the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research, as reported 16 December 2006 in the Capital Times of Madison.
Landau has been a fellow of the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS) in Washington, DC for 27 years, and he is also a senior fellow and former director of the Transnational Institute [3] in Amsterdam.

sandiego.indymedia.org | Saul Landau Shows Iraq Film at Unitarian-Universalist Church   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Landau went to Iraq with a group of political leaders from the U.S. and other countries, and in his film he presented the voices of Iraqis both in the government and on the streets pleading with ordinary Americans to do what they can to stop the Bush administration from leading a war against their country.
Landau examined the two main charges being made against Hussein by the U.S.: that his government sponsors terrorists in general and al-Qaeda in particular; and that Iraq not only has weapons of mass destruction but directly threatens the U.S. and the rest of the world with them.
Landau also argued that as with ancient Rome, which also began as a republic and had to become an imperial dictatorship to handle the burdens of running an empire and suppressing all attempts by its subjects to rebel, so the U.S. has effectively lost its democratic institutions and become a dictatorial empire.

sandiego.indymedia.org | Saul Landau Shows Syria Movie in San Diego   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Part of that history, Landau explained, is that many Lebanese supported the Syrian military presence as a way of stopping the civil war that raged there in the 1980’s, stabilizing the country and preventing the formation of Maronite and Falangist militias, “many of which worked hand-in-glove with Israel,” he explained.
Landau said that Hariri’s murder was indeed despicable, but it’s hardly the only time in recent Middle Eastern history that a political leader has been deliberately targeted for assassination.
Landau’s other major point is that Syria — which, since the downfall of Saddam Hussein’s regime in Iraq, is the only Arab state still ruled by the pan-Arab nationalist, socialist and secular Ba’ath movement — is actually quite a cosmopolitan place.

ED HERMAN on SAUL LANDAU'S LETTER ON "PACIFICA BASHING"
Landau has never replied to these questions, but clearly he and some of his co-signers are unwilling to challenge this unaccountable authority and are prepared to accommodate to it in a way that is a bit surprising for liberals and leftists.
Landau's letter speaks of critics of the management that "paint this progressive network as some sort of runaway, rightwing juggernaut in the grip of a dark conspiracy." Notice how he makes the "network" identical with its management.
Landau puts an unwarrantedly positive gloss on the objectives of the Pacifica management, asserting that they want "a larger...but still progressive audience." How he knows their aims as regards audience politics is puzzling.

 Reply to Saul Landau
Saul Landau's original letter and his reply to my ZNet Comment reflect clear differences between us, that lead to sharply different policy conclusions, and I want to briefly summarize these.
Saul praises Democracy Now, but one of my correspondents tells me that while Democracy Now had live interviews with anti-death penalty activists in front of the Supreme Court on February 28, WPFW and their 2 PM news rap didn't even mention these protests, which were lead stories even on CNN at the time.
Saul Landau not only fails to recognize the true authoritarians, he continues to fail to challenge the right of the self- perpetuating board to reprogram and abandon large numbers in the alleged interest of wider outreach.

Saul Landau's bilious Pacifica News signoff once again shows the vapidity of the KPFK "Third Faction" he so transparently promotes.
Saul Landau is a good man. This undisputed fact makes it that much weirder when he remains so out of the loop on the 7-year Pacifica crisis, which nearly everyone else agrees is a struggle for the freedom of our nation's last independent radio voice.
Landau's a company man. The old company, that is, which is rapidly morphing into a counter-revolutionary cell describing itself as the "Third Faction." This particular obstructionist Thermidor is based at KPFK, and it remains forever loyal to the stone-graven Schubbista Creed, which I quote, from a 2000 news article:

Edward S Herman's Rebuttal to Saul Landau's Final PNN Remarks
Landau does not have a critical word about the old management's squandering of millions for Beltway lawyers, corporate credit cards for staffers, bloated parachute deals and exorbitant fees for public-relations companies which fended off the opposition—his only anger is aimed at oppositional tactics.
Landau was helping destroy, by integration into that "political and economic power" structure, one of the most important left institutions, Pacifica.
It is a bit ironic that Saul Landau's head should roll, after his long alignment with the Pacifica management and hijackers, and his complete silence as HIS "Pacifica" fired hundreds of paid and unpaid staff.

Amazon.ca: The Pre-Emptive Empire: A Guide to Bush's Kingdom: Books: Saul Landau   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Landau not only covers the war against Iraq and US meddling in the Middle East in general, but provides the reader with context to understand the sometimes shocking headlines.
Landau's The Pre-Emptive Empire: A Guide to Bush's Kingdom, offers an incisive, bold, and witty portrait of the lingering parallels, contradictions and dramatic shifts in U.S. foreign policy under President George W. Bush before (Part I, "Leaving the Republic Behind") and after the 9/11 attacks (Part II, "The Empire Strikes Back").
Fans of progressive writers/activists Howard Zinn and Noam Chomsky will find The Pre-Emptive Empire just as intellectually stimulating and thought provoking, but with a glaring difference: Landau's work is an inspiring call for citizens--from college students, blue collar workers, activists and the politically disillusioned alike--to reclaim their Republic and participate in shaping their history.
