	Saul Laskin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Saul Laskin (born 1918) is a retired Canadian politician.
		He was previously mayor of Port Arthur, Ontario from 1962 to 1969.
		Laskin was the first and only Jewish mayor elected at the Lakehead.

		Saul Laskin, 86, was a platoon commander in the infantry with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, a unit in the 3rd Division.
		As a lieutenant, Laskin was armed with a Browning 9-mm handgun and his batman carried a Sten Gun.
		Laskin, whose brother was the late Chief Justice of Canada, Bora Laskin, said near the end of the war, his platoon crossed the Rhine into Germany on pontoons.

		Over 63 years two plebiscites were held in 1920 and 1958 and both times they were defeated.
		However in 1964, Saul Laskin, Mayor of the City of Port Arthur, requested the Provincial Cabinet conduct a study of various issues which were confronting five of the larger municipalities, the City of Port Arthur, the City of Fort William, the Municipality of Neebing, the Municipality of Paipoonge and the Municipality of Shuniah.
		The Hardy report resulted in a recommendation of the amalgamation of the five municipalities in question, which created the City of Thunder Bay on January 1, 1970.
