Born in a German refugee camp, actor SaulRubinek was raised in Canada, where he began his career.
Rubinek's performance as the best friend of religious cult member Nick Mancuso in the little-seen Ticket to Heaven (1981) was a critical coup for the actor, though most mainstream filmgoers ignored the film.
A reliable presence in such meaty supporting roles as the Ned Buntline-ish dime novelist in The Unforgiven (1994), Rubinek was equally believable in the starring role of a neurotic, love-hungry Jewish New Yorker in Soup for One (1982).
For SaulRubinek acting was a way of life he was born into, but born in a time and place no one would ever wish for.
SaulRubinek drew his first breath in a refugee camp in Germany a few years after the end of WW II where his father ran a Yiddish Repertory Theatre company.

Saul is a theatrical tragedy in five acts, written by Vittorio Alfieri in 1782, in which the eponymous protagonist simulatenously embodies the tragic heroism of both tyrant and victim.
Early in his career he gained the attention of Canadian audiences when he starred as detective Benny Cooperman in two TV movies, The Suicide Murders (1985) and Murder Sees the Light (1986), which are based on books in author Howard Engel's popular series of mystery novels set in the Niagara Region of Canada.
Rubinek had a recurring role as Lon Cohen in the 2001 series A Nero Wolfe Mystery.

SaulRubinek has spent the past twenty years playing nerds, nebbishes, losers, cowards.
This is because we were shown this film at an impressionable age, several times over, by well-intentioned people who hoped to dissuade us from joining Moonie-like cults and who did not, apparently, see the irony in showing a film about cults repeatedly to a bunch of impressionable kids.
Curiously, this repeated exposure to Rubinek had the unintended effect of making us want to hang out more often with wisecracking Jews, a practice we embrace to this day.

Veteran character actor SaulRubinek makes his directorial debut in this adaptation and expansion of Rick Cleveland's short stage play, eschewing style (though his smooth scene transitions are lovely and inventive) for ensemble performance.
His cast (including William H. Macy, Ted Danson, Peter Riegert, and a sly turn by Charles Durning as a retiring pro who may have done both Kennedy and Elvis--"I ain't saying I did, and I ain't saying I didn't") is uniformly excellent.
