PIXELSURGEON | Reviews | Music | Saul Williams
Saul Williams is an actor and a musician but he is a poet before everything.
Saul sings, “…I gave hip-hop to white boys when nobody was looking / They found it locked in a basement when they gentrified Brooklyn / I left a list of instructions, an MPC, and a mic / My sci-fi library and utensils to write”.
Maybe Saul did not know where he was taking the music while he was making it, and the album goes from being universally appealing to being downright odd.

Williams plays the film's protagonist, Raymond Joshua, a petty marijuana peddler who is devoured by D.C.'s predatory criminal justice system after being arrested on a minor possession charge.

Williams cites this neglect, coupled with the dismissal of the legitimacy of young fl voices by their elders, as the root of the widening generation gap plaguing the fl community.

Saul Williams has been the star of a film; now he's the star of his own record.
Williams calls his turn in "Slam," as central character Raymond Joshua, "a mission." His mission in making the film is portraying a world, in this world's verité, in which words call worlds into existence.
His debut album finds Williams speaking, rapping, and singing his way over an ungainly mix of breakbeats, string parts, and peace/love drug-rock flourishes, the whole sounding like it's dropped in from a freaked-out cosmos devoid of self-consciousness and flushed with earnestness.
