Saul the King - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saul (שאול המלך) (or Sha'ul) (שָׁאוּל "Borrowed", Standard Hebrew Šaʾul, Tiberian Hebrew Šāʾûl) was the first king of the ancient Kingdom of Israel described in the Hebrew Bible.
Saul was the son of Kish, of the tribe of Benjamin.
Saul was apparently somewhat impatient to go into battle against a vastly superior Philistine force at Michmash, leading to a curse from Samuel and the departure of the old judge.

 Saul (WebBible Encyclopedia) - ChristianAnswers.Net
Saul, with 2,000 men, occupied Michmash and Mount Bethel; while his son Jonathan, with 1,000 men, occupied Gibeah, to the south of Geba, and seemingly without any direction from his father "smote" the Philistines in Geba.
Saul and his 600 men, a band which speedily increased to 10,000, perceiving the confusion, pursued the army of the Philistines, and the tide of battle rolled on as far as to Bethaven, halfway between Michmash and Bethel.
The name "Saul" was probably given to him at the time of his circumcision, perhaps, in memory of King Saul of Israel or in memory of a relative.

The kingdom was rent from Saul and was given to another, even to David, whom the Lord chose to be Saul's successor, and whom Samuel anointed (16:1-13).

Saul also succeeded in unifying the nation and organising the fighting men into a dedicated army.
Even though Saul was a courageous man he found himself in positions where his weaknesses were evident, so that instead of trusting God, he would give-in under pressure and yield to his impulses.
There are times, as we read about them in Scriptures, when it does not appear that Saul thought through his plans before he put them into practice, nor did he consider beforehand the consequences of his acts of disobedience.
