Saunders-Roe Princess - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Saunders-Roe Princess was a very large flying boat aircraft built in the United Kingdom by Saunders-Roe, based in Cowes on the Isle of Wight.
At the time, the Saunders-Roe Princess was one of the largest aircraft in existence; unfortunately, by the 1950s, the concept of a passenger carrying flying boat was dead.
The four inner propellers were double, contra-rotating propellers driven by a twin version of the Proteus, the Bristol Coupled Proteus; each engine drove one of the propellers.

Telegraph Opinion Concorde's demise is 40 years too late
Twenty-five years before Concorde, the UK produced two bloatedly-luxurious projects, the Bristol Brabazon (140 tons, eight engines) and the Saunders-Roe Princess (150 tons, 10 engines), two flying ocean liners that were cancelled once economic reality had struck home.
So with instincts finely tuned (and fingers thoroughly burnt) on the Brabazon and Princess projects, shortly afterwards, the British did their best to get out of Concorde.
The origins of Concorde lay in the British desire to join the EEC (as it then was) in the early 1960s.
