Saurimo has been a key military base for the government in the past, a launching-pad for attacks elsewhere in the Lundas, particularly around the diamond area of Cafunfo, and would doub tless be so again should hostilities resume.
In Saurimo itself, the best, and possibly only hotel accommodation in town belongs to Dona Kina from Kuito, whose small family restaurant is much less modest than it initially seems, but far from cheap.
She was coaxed down from $85 to $50 a night by a business friend anxious to set up in the area amidst protestations about rising prices and the lack of a steady clientele.

The goal is to provide immediate support for displaced families to survive, and to provide them with orientation and resources in case they can return to their places of origin and resume a normal live.
In Luena and Saurimo a program for treating trauma affected children will also be introduced in collaboration with the organization International Child Development Program (ICDP) which has developed its activities on an initiative from Norway.

The accident occurred about 50 km (30 miles) from Saurimo, capital of Lunda Sul province in the former Portuguese colony which is sunk in a decades-old civil war.
It had left Luanda on Tuesday morning and was flying between rural cities before heading back to the capital at the end of the day, according to the report.

 Plane explodes on takeoff in Angola
The Antonov 26 aircraft burst into flames Tuesday at about 7:30 p.m., minutes after it left the town of Saurimo, 500 miles east of the Angolan capital of Luanda, Angolan Civil Aviation Director Branco Ferreira told state radio RNA.
Saurimo is located in an area of thick jungle in a main diamond-mining region.
It left Luanda on Tuesday morning and was on a refueling stop at Saurimo before heading back to the capital at the end of the day, Ferreira said.

An agreement between Moydow, Concord Minerals LLC, and Endiama (Angola's state run diamond company) permits diamond exploration on the Dala diamond concession south of Saurimo.
Partners Moydow of Toronto, Canada, and Nevada-based Concord will be responsible for exploration and property development and share a combined 33 percent interest in the project.
