Sauropus androgynus (sweet leaf bush)/Australian New Crops Newsletter
The leaves and the top 15cm of stem tips of the Sauropus plant have a pleasant taste, similar to fresh garden peas, and slightly nutty and are normally eaten raw in salads or steamed, to add to stir-fry, rice and egg dishes, soups or casseroles.
Sauropus has a high level of provita-min A carotenoids, especially in freshly picked leaves, as well as high levels of vitamins B and C, protein and minerals.
Sauropus became a popular ingredient of an unconfirmed weight control method in Taiwan in 1995 and several cases of poisoning were reported.

Patients complaining of a dry cough, shortness of breath and gradual respiratory failure after eating sauropus began to surface in 1995 -- about two years after the vegetable was first imported from Southeast Asia -- according to medical journal reports.
The reasons why sauropus affects the lungs and not other major systems is still a mystery, said Fu, who is also deputy director of the Cheng Hsin Medical Center in Taipei.
Ironically, sauropus is also high in a wide variety of vitamins.

Sauropus androgynus (Euphorbiaceae) is a popular vegetable in Thailand.
In 1995, the plant was associated with several cases of poisoning when used in a Taiwanese weight control method and the toxicity was attributed to its alkaloid content.
The presence of isoquinoline alkaloids as the major constituents in a Sauropus species was confirmed.

Thirty three-day-old seedlings of nonmycorrhizal Sauropus androgynus were transplanted into pots containing a subsurface Oxisol uninoculated or inoculated with Glomus aggregatum at three target soil solution phosphorus (P) concentrations.
Root dry matter yield of mycorrhizal sauropus was greater than that of nonmycorrhizal sauropus at all soil P concentrations tested.
Growth of mycorrhizal sauropus at this P concentration was also comparable to non-mycorrhizal growth of the plant at soil P concentration of 0.2 mg/L. Based on the growth responses observed sauropus was classified as a highly mycorrhizal dependent species.

To further evaluate the association between S. androgynus and bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome, a hospital-based case-control study was conducted with one case group and three different control groups at Veterans General Hospital-Kaohsiung between April and September 1995.
