Saurornitholestes langstoni (Langston's lizard-bird thief") is a coyote-sized carnivorous dromaeosaurid dinosaur genus from the Upper Cretaceous (Upper Campanian) of Alberta, Canada.
Saurornitholestes most intimately resembles Velociraptor, although the precise relationships of the Dromaeosauridae are still comparatively poorly understood.
Saurornitholestes appears to have been the most ordinary small theropod in dinosaur Provincial Park and teeth and bones are much more ordinary than those of its more massive contemporary, Dromaeosaurus.

 Matt Martyniuk: Einiosaurus
Saurornitholestes is a raptor closely related to Deinonychus and Velociraptor, and bears the trademark sickle claws.
Saurornitholestes, which like all raptors is probably a flightless bird or at least extremely close relative, is one of the most advanced "classic" saurischians.
As the ceratopsian watches the dromaeosaurid sleep, it's almost poignant to realize that here, close to the end of the Mesozoic era, ornithischians will soon be extinct, leaving the Earth to their feathery sister group.

Matt Martyniuk: Saurornitholestes langstoni   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Saurornitholestes, a close North American relative of Velociraptor, roamed Canada during the early Cretaceous and was a contemporary of such dinosaurs as Struthiomimus and Einiosaurus.
In this sketch (part of an aborted larger scene which was to include Struthiomimus and Montanazhdarcho), a Saurornitholestes spreads its wings and struts forward in an attempt to scare a larger bird away from the dead pterosaur at its feet.
The plumage I use here is based on a combination of an eagle and the puff-tail specimen of Cryptovolans, but is also consistent with some of the later microraptorian fossil finds.

 HELL CREEK RAPTOR
Discovered in 1978 in North America, the dromaeosaur Saurornitholestes was found to have a much larger brain than most other "raptors".
The hands of Saurornitholestes were well-adapted for grasping and its bones are hollow creating a very strong but lightweight frame for speed in running.
No doubt, to many other creatures living in the midst of Saurornitholestes, this was one swift and deadly meat-eater to avoid.

Dinosaur of the Day - Unexplained Mysteries Discussion Forums
Saurornitholestes was a small but fierce hunter and a member of the raptor family of dinosaurs that includes the famous Velociraptor.
The partial skull fragments of Saurornitholestes seem to indicate an extremely close relationship with Velociraptor, but its body remains, which are very incomplete, more closely resemble Deinonychus.
An interesting discovery was made of a Saurornitholestes tooth imbedded in a pterosaur bone.

 The Dinosaur Saurornitholestes - KidsDinos.com
Saurornitholestes competed with much larger Dinosaurs, such as the famous T-Rex for food.
Being hundreds of times smaller than a T-Rex, Saurornitholestes' prey were probably small animals like lizards, frogs, early birds, and early mammals.
Some believe that Saurornitholestes may have been covered in feathers, as shown here, but this is not conclusive.

 dromaeosauridae
Based on a partial subadult (approximately three-quarters adult size) skeleton originally referred to Velociraptor, the unfortunately-named Bambiraptor is another derived theropod, possibly close to the base of Dromaeosauridae, or maybe the same thing as Saurornitholestes.
Some researchers have suggested that it hunted in packs, but evidence to support this claim is ambiguous.
Saurornitholestes appears in some ways to be between Velociraptor and Deinonychus in anatomy.

More distant relatives include Deinonychus, Velociraptor, Saurornitholestes, Microraptor, etc. The ancestors of dromaeosaurs appear to have been capable of flight, which would make Dromaeosaurus a dinosaurlike bird, rather than a birdlike dinosaur.
Dromaeosaurus was much more heavily built than other dromaeosaurs, with strong teeth and massive jaws, and powerful hindlimbs.
Overall, the animal is fairly similar to Saurornitholestes, just much more massive in construction.

If *Deinonychus* and *Saurornitholestes* should be subsumed into *Velociraptor,* despite the specific apomorphies of each -- sensu Paul, for example -- and the provenance of *Bambiraptor* being identical to that of *Saurornitholestes,* suggesting morphological synonymy though I've not seen an explicit enumeration of how, then ALL become synonyms of *Velociraptor*....

The feathers make it easier for the warm-blooded animal to keep warm, and also help it to keep its balance when running at speed.

When is a new dinosaur erected as a new species or genus?
The only hard and fast rule here is that of precendence: that is, when someone considers that two or more genera are actually the same, then the older of the genus names must be used.
For example, if Saurornitholestes langstoni and Velociraptor mongoliensis turn out to be species of the same genus, then that genus would be called Velociraptor (established in 1924) rather than Saurornitholestes (established in 1978); and the species would accordingly be called V.
In summary, there is no consensus even within dinosaur palaeontology - let alone across biological disciplines - on the what ``genus'' should mean and how inclusive or exclusive it should be in terms of morphological, behavioral or molecular diversity.

New sites have been collected (surface collected and screened) during the past five years from the inland floodplain deposits of the upper Aguja Formation (Campanian to early Maastrichtian) at Rattlesnake Mountain, increasing the vertebrate record for Big Bend.
Numerous dinosaur eggshell fragments and small teeth from hatchlings or juveniles of hadrosaurs and theropods (tyrannosaurid and Saurornitholestes) demonstrate that dinosaurs nested in Big Bend.
The Big Bend dinosaur fauna was less diverse compared to northern areas as a result of the warmer and drier climate.

Only a few articulated specimens of dinosaurs have been collected in the Oldman Formation in the Manyberries area.  No identifiable articulated dinosaur remains have been collected from the Lower muddy unit.  The Comrey Sandstone interval has yielded a well-preserved Brachylophosaurus skeleton.
The upper Muddy unit has proved to be the most productive for vertebrate macrofossils.  A partial, but well as a Saurornitholestes skeleton was collected by the Tyrrell Museum, as was a disarticulated skull of Centrosaurus.
The general composition of the faunal assemblage in the Manyberries area is similar to that in Dinosaur Provincial Park, but differences are present in the relative abundance of the different kinds of animals, particularly turtles.
