		When it comes to Puligny Montrachet one is either a Leflaive or a Sauzet fan – and it seems to be quite polarised.
		But to be a Sauzet fan, you need patience, for these wines always take longer to reach full maturity, owing to the higher acidity levels inherent in these wines.
		But when they ‘arrive’ there is nothing more evocative than a Sauzet wine; the intensity of flavour combined with the sublime balance of the wines, everything in harmony, whether it is a humble Villages Puligny or a Grand Cru Chevalier, these wines are poetry.

		I have been fortunate to taste a fair few wines from Etienne Sauzet, one of the most prominent producers in Puligny-Montrachet, with a portfolio of wines covering renowned Premier Cru climats and Grand Cru, including Le Montrachet which I have never been afforded the opportunity to taste.
		Etienne Sauzet was born in 1903 and inherited 3-hectares of vines from his family, augmented by further parcels after he married in 1924.
		Although I would argue that Sauzet's wines do not having the breeding or nervosity of Domaine Leflaive, this is still a great source of quintessential Puligny-Montrachet, with each climat, each patch of terroir lending the Cru's their individuality.

		My friend arrived this afternoon from Richmond, having smuggled in a motherlode of Buz & Ned's Barbecue, and so as payback, while he's upstairs working on his laptop, I blinded him with a 1993 Kaiser Sauzet Batard (okay, so it's Etienne Sauzet, but you have to permit me my pet names).
		I haven't had this wine in several years now, but remember the trilogy of Grand Cru 93s from The Kaiser as being over-the-top good, the Monty being one of the singularly great bottles of wine I've ever tasted.
