Savatage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Savatage is a heavy metal/progressive metal band founded by the brothers Jon and Criss Oliva in 1979.
Chris Caffery, who had been playing with Savatage on their 1987 tour as a second rhythm player offstage and out of audience sight, was introduced as a new band member in 1988.
By this time, Savatage was taking as much fire for their "Broadway-Metal" aspirations as they were praise; while there was no doubt that Trans-Siberian Orchestra albums had found an audience, many older, more long-term Savatage fans complained of a lack of any real difference between the sounds of Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Savatage.

Their 80s output is a considerably less confusing soap opera than what transpired over the course of the 90s when the band was faced with horrible tragedies, constantly changing lineups and side projects that seemingly were better received than the main band.
Many Savatage fans cite this disc as their favorite, so evident is its importance in their musical evolution.
It is a union between the earlier roots of the band and the new intensely artistic side of the group.

Savatage are one of those bands that I've been into since the 80's.
Second live album in a row from Savatage, this one following on the heels of "Ghost in the Ruins." This album was recorded during the "Handful of Rain" tour in which Alex Skolnick (ex-Testament) was on guitar.
Old Savatage fans ought to really enjoy this disc for two reasons: 1) because this disc returns Savatage to a heavy metal sound and 2) because Jon Oliva is back doing all the vocals on this disc.

 Criss Oliva - hotshotdigital.com
Criss Oliva was a gifted guitarist who helped to develop Savatage from a standard heavy metal group into one that could merge divergent styles and produce accessible and skillful concept albums.
It was 1987 when Savatage really hit their stride and Criss’ guitar playing got the recognition it deserved.
Criss was happy with the direction that the band was taking; they were developing new audiences without leaving their original support behind.

Savatage.  Driving guitars, melodic verses and powerful lyrics make their music unlike anything else.
Since their start in the early 80s, Savatage has released more than a dozen albums.  Each album varies in style yet seems the same as the others.
The first of three rock operas by Savatage, Streets (1991) was the last album with Jon Oliva as lead singer.

Zack also stated when he was joining Savatage how he obviously had to, somehow, adapt his vocal style to the repertoire of the band.

In the course of their twenty or so years of existence, Savatage has developed into one of the leading metal/hard rock bands around.
Their earlier work is harder, more power-metal oriented, while the later albums have more of an accessible hard rock sound, with with slight progressive touches.
The later albums are less my style, but their maturity and musicianship is quite evident, and thus the band has maintained a solid following throughout their career.

Megadeth - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The album was a new direction for Megadeth which was produced by country music producer Dann Huff.
But shortly after its release, Marty Friedman left the band (claiming that Mustaine had removed a guitar solo of his from a song titled "Breadline" without informing him) and was replaced by Al Pitrelli, formerly of Savatage.
Looking for a way to end their contract with Capitol Records, the band released a Greatest Hits collection entitled Capitol Punishment: The Megadeth Years (2000).

Musically, Savatage have built upon the musical ground of Handful of Rain with grand but heavy arrangements of theatrical and complex pieces.

Savatage would never sound like this again, although they may reach heavyness like this on 2001's POETS & MADMEN, the sound and textures on here and 1984's DUNGEONS ARE CALLING go unmatched in Savatage's massive catalog, and that's too bad, but it makes this album and the next just that more special
Getting back to the music, this is some of the best stuff EVER released by the band and it shows them at the best time in their career, before the musical direction changes and personal tragedies/line-up changes.
Fans of later Savatage albums with the opera-metal overtones may not like the more straight-forward metal approach, but give it a try, Savatage is just that great of a band who produced great music in any era since their inception.

In 1986, after the release of their fourth album, Fight for the Rock, a failed attempt at a commercial approach imposed by the record company, Savatage toured with Metallica, KISS and Motörhead.

At the beginning of their career the musical style was oriented to classic 80´s Heavy Metal, but in 1989 they change a bit his music introducing more keyboards and giving a symphonic/metal sound to his works.
Besides SAVATAGE, most of his members play on a side-project called TRANS-SIBERIAN ORCHESTRA, a orchestra-metal band with three albums, first two oriented to Christmas sound and the last one is a concept album about Beethoven music (this one especially recomended).
