Cokemachineglow.com - Concert Reviews: Savath and Savalas
It seemed somewhat odd that when Savath & Savalas were announced as passing through DC, the Black Cat club chose to advertise the show as "Savath & Savales [sic] (Scott Herren of Prefuse 73)." True, the Herren name is bound to attract fans, but the difference between the two groups is immeasurable.
The most vocal call for non-comparison comes from Herren himself, who is quick to make the distinction between his identities as the brilliant glitch-hop producer behind Prefuse 73 and the songsmith and instrumentalist of Savath & Savalas.
The audience's near-complete indifference to the openers seemed pretty justified, as DJ Nobody did almost nothing with the samples he was manipulating and Molina's stage presence left much to be desired.

Savath & Savalas: Golden Pollen: Pitchfork Record Review
His almost-namesake, Gil Scott-Heron, could get away with nearly anything in his prime, partly because his reputation preceded him, and partly because he had enough inborn charisma and cool to pull off virtually anything-- even to the point of making decent spoken word records.
To be sure, Herren's new Savath and Savalas album, Golden Pollen, would make a terrible hip-hop record.
Prefuse 73's Scott Herren last release under the Savath & Savalas moniker was steeped in tradition and convention, a lite-FM, soft-pop bore.

Check out what we've had to say in the past about Savath And Savalas in our weekly reviews.
Well I have to admit, despite sounding as warm as a heated electric blanket in the summer sun, Savath and Savalas's last full length left me as cold as a damp dishcloth in Darlington.
This time Mr Herren has added a few killer tunes to the brew and so what you get is pastoral Spanish vocals backed by chiming guitars, warm horns and the clever tinkering of a master at work.

filter magazine - reviews - Savath & Savalas
Savath & Savalas is the work of Guillermo Scott Herren a.k.a.
For all intents and purposes, this record should be one where reviewers get to use made up words like "dubtronic" and "digi-hop" and a bunch of guys with soul patches and way too many pairs of shorts go out and buy the record immediately.
Instead, it sounds like the Latin American sound that was coming in strong back in the early ‘70s: A smooth, organic sound——lush and almost psychedelic in its attention to pattern and detail.

Day to Day, February 9, 2004 · Producer Scott Herren -- AKA Prefuse 73 -- packed up his trademark downtempo hip-hop electronica groove and headed to Spain, where he teamed up with Catalan vocalist Eva Puyuelo to form Savath & Savalas.
The group's new album Apropa't is inspired by everything from 1970s Brazilian and Spanish psychedelic soul to Southern-fried American hip-hop.

Savath & Savalas: Apropa't - PopMatters Music Review
The new album from Savath & Savalas, aka Scott Herren, aka Prefuse 73, has something important to say, and despite the fact that they say it in Spanish and my Spanish is not so good, I seem to have stumbled upon a concise translation: Goodbye boredom!
Apropa't pulses with sensual rhythms, lush harmonies, and ethereal forms that weave together to create a truly amazing aural experience.
But, if you don't buy the new Savath & Savalas, it will hurt you more than it will hurt me.

Savath and Savalas . Manana [prefixmag review]   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
Savath and Savalas's Apropa't was the worst kind of record for reviewers, the kind that wakes them up in cold sweat in the middle of the night because they know too good or too bad a review might reveal them as fakes.
In fact, Herren uses his knob-twiddling skills much more in the foreground here than anywhere on Apropa't; the final song is more a sound collage designed to evoke cinematic emotion than anything resembling even the most abstract of Herren and Puyelo's collaborations.
That album was a self-contained jewel, and the continual evolution of the Savath and Savalas sound makes its future incarnations worth anticipating just as much as the next Prefuse 73 album is.

Not so long ago, Guillermo Scott Herren upped his Atlanta roots and decamped to Barcelona, Spain’s north-eastern melting pot port and home to some of the hippest music currently circling the globe.
Teaming up with local vocalist/songwriter, Eva Puyuelo Muns, he decided to carry on his Savath & Savalas project, which began back in 1999.
Almost all of the music here is performed & penned by the pair, with a little help from some additional bass, drums, trumpet & flugelhorn and guest vocal on ‘Sigue tu camino (No sabes amar….)’, featuring Azita Youssefi.

Every so often, there comes an album that seems almost too fragile to evaluate, as if even looking in its direction would shatter it, destroying its very existence.
So it is with Scott Herren's latest work as Savath & Savalas.
Recording with his friend Eva Puyuelo Muns in Barcelona, the city he now calls home, Apropa't exposes so much about the trajectory of the relationship that it becomes a fascinating look at an artist at the top of his game suddenly transformed.

The short length makes the meat and potatoes of this disc, which feature some breezy melodies and vocals, ambient production, coupled with that backbone of Herren's usual drive, really fade from the mostly atmospheric experimentation found throughout.
While pursuing this interesting territory in the future, I feel Savath would be served best by cutting the ironic and jarring tones they use to contrast their melodic folk to a minimum and instead focus on involving the listener moreso into their aural quest of bridging past and future.
