BATTERY ERRORS In baseball's early years, wild pitches, passed balls, and hit batsmen were lumped together in the statistical summary of a game as battery errors and were charged against the fielding percentage of the pitcher or catcher.
SAVE Created by Jerome Holtzman of the Chicago Sun-Times, the save began to be reported by The Sporting News on a regular basis in 1960.
In 1973 the save was redefined so that a reliever had not only to finish the game but also to find the potential tying or winning run on base or at the plate, or, alternately, to pitch the final three innings of a victorious contest.

A save in hockey is the successful blocking of a shot on goal by a goaltender.
Similarly, a save in soccer is the successful blocking of a shot by a goalkeeper.

Baseball is played between two teams of nine players each on a baseball field, usually under the authority of one or more officials, called umpires.
Baseball history is full of heroes and goats—men who in the heat of the moment distinguished themselves with a timely hit or catch, or an untimely strikeout or error.

Baseball statistics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
General managers and baseball scouts study player statistics to decide what players to try to get for their team.
Traditionally, statistics like batting average for batters (the number of hits divided by the number of at bats) and earned run average (approximately the number of runs given up by a pitcher per nine innings) have governed the statistical world of baseball.
Comprehensive, historical baseball statistics were difficult for the average fan to access until 1951, when researcher Hy Turkin published "The Complete Encyclopedia of Baseball".

In baseball, a hold is awarded to a relief pitcher if they enter in a save situation, record at least one out, and leave the game without having reliquished that lead.
Generally, a save situation is when a pitcher enters the game with a lead of three runs or less and finishes the game without relinquishing the lead.
The hold was invented in 1986 to give a statistical measure of the effectiveness of non-closer relief pitchers.

Rhodes blew eight saves, and there's a chance that one of them actually came in a situation where he would have had a chance to save the game had he pitched perfectly.
Saying Rhodes was 5-for-13 in save chances from 2002-2003 sounds quite a bit different than saying he was 5-for-6 in real save chances and 45-for-52 in hold chances, and I suspect, if you looked back through his entire career, you'd find much of the same in regard to his 17-for-44 overall save record.
Baseball statistics are wonderful, powerful things that can help us understand and learn so much about the game.

The book's success is rooted in its focus on the people "obsessed with baseball's statistics ever since the box score started it all in 1845," rather than being about the statistics themselves.
Delivered in a delightfully breezy and confident style, this volume also serves as an excellent alternate or parallel history of the sport, as we see how the statistics influenced the game itself—such as the banning of the spitball—as much as they were used to detail individual games.
The discussion of errors in baseball's historical stats was remarkably disturbing.
