Recycling one ton of paper saves 682.5 gallons of oil, 4,200 kilowatt hours of electricity, 7,000 gallons of water, 3.3 cubic yards of landfill space and 17 trees.
After accounting for paper that was probably saved (e.g., filed or not yet used), this means that approximately 14 million tons of fine papers were left in landfills, nearly 9% of the materials in landfills and almost a third of the paper and paper products landfilled.
