Savoy Brown really did deserve better in the long run, especially the second edition of the group which boasted Chris Youlden as the lead singer - they were a far more elemental blues group than the boogie-till-you-woogie reputation with which they were rather unfairly cuffed.
This is my favorite Savoy Brown line up.Lonesome Dave Peverett (later the lead vocalist of Foghat), who took over lead vocals after Chris Youlden left the band, is in great vocal form on cuts 5 thru 10.
The Savoys were always little more rock oriented live than in the studio and you get the sense that these guys really liked playing live (altough you must get the Jack the Toad Live CD with Jackie Lynton on vocals to really get a feel for what a band having fun sounds like).

The songs are still draped with Savoy Brown's sleek, bluesy feel, but the deep-rooted blues essence that so easily emerged from their last album doesn't rise as high throughout Hellbound Train's tracks.
Because of Savoy Brown's depth of talent, this rather nonchalant approach doesn't make Hellbound Train a "bad" album by any means -- it just fails to equal the potency of its predecessor.
But there is a noticeable difference in the albums that followed this one, as the band and especially Simmonds himself was beginning to show signs of fatigue, and a significant decline in the group's overall sound was rapidly becoming apparent.

 Savoy Brown CD Review
Savoy Brown entered the blues picture close to forty years ago as a leading outfit on the UK scene and while the band continues on, the only remaining figure from that time is Kim Simmonds.
While his guitar abilities are superb, his rather thin voice isn't going to make anyone forget the whiskey-soaked vocals of former frontman, Chris Youlden, or those who followed him over Savoy Brown's numerous personnel changes.
Although the band acquits themselves well instrumentally, Kim Simmonds is lacking the required dirt in his voice to turn this effort from middle-of-the-road into a grinding top-shelf set of blues.
