I was shocked by Savusavu; it looks more like what I might picture a small town in the Philippines than Fiji: bright hand-painted shop signs, streets cluttered with Melanesians, dirty little eateries, and a few wandering barnyard animals.
But then arrive a hoard of westerners and victimized Indians (the population in Fiji is about 50% Indian Hindu, indentured laborers brought in by the British about 120 years ago to work the sugar cane plantations--much more on this later), with locks and guns and lots of private property that isn't to be touched.
