  Cary Elwes: Saw - Movie
"Saw" might pass itself off as a horror movie, but the fact is that this engine of death and destruction is a flick with more on its mind than splatter.
"Saw" immerses you in a charnel house sunk deep within the ground, well stocked with clues---indeed, whatever you think of this monster called the Jigsaw Killer, you must at least acknowledge his willingness to provide his victims with the means to their salvation.
For "Saw" is only slightly a serial killer movie: it tips its hat to "Se7en" and "Silence of the Lambs", but its dark, wicked, brutal art is born from far more truly from the monster movie.

Saw (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saw is a 2004 thriller / horror movie, directed by James Wan and co-written by Wan and Leigh Whannell.
Saw was released in theaters on October 29, 2004.
Critical responses were mixed: Saw earned a 45% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, and a 29% rating from the "cream of the crop" (the most esteemed professional critics), qualifying it as "rotten."[2] Rotten seemed to refer to the grossness of the movie as well as the quality and worth of the film.

Saw, unlike the teenage soft-porn thrillers and dime-a-dozen franchises that seem ill-conceived from the first installment but still manage to produce eight sequels, is a horror film that boasts a witty script, lightning paced editing and an effective cast.
Saw derives its chills from its storyline, sure the editing helps, as does the music and camera angles but, as is the case with Saw, if the story is good, it can effect you to the bone without any cheap tricks.
Saw contains the usual plot twists, and sets itself up for a possible sequel, however the twists are truly surprising and the possibility of a sequel is something that I look forward to rather than scratch my head over.

Joe Critic | "Saw" Movie Review & More
Saw is about two men, trapped in a strange room together, oblivious as to how they ended up there.
As the movie leads to its final act, the film becomes boring for a 20-minute stretch, which is inexcusable for such a short horror film.
Saw barely makes up for all these annoying problems with a clever ending; one that solely transforms the movie from silly cliche into a uniquely intelligent movie.

 Saw movie review
Saw isn't as good as the trailers make it look, but it's still a pretty darn good horror flick.
The basic idea of the movie is that you've got two guys chained to opposite sides of a really dirty bathroom, and there's a dead guy laying in a pool of blood in the middle of the room.
One thing this movie does exceptionally well, and this is why it's getting 4 stars instead of 3, is setting you up on who the bad guy really is. They throw out some obvious fakers, and some subtle hints on others so you think you have it all figured out.

Flipside Movie Emporium: Saw Movie Review
For the image and tone it so efficiently creates is nevertheless fairly shopworn, and though it has its share of unsettling moments, it's not nearly as scary as it wants to be.
Were it merely a routine thriller, such dashed hopes would be expected, but Saw's disappointments cut deeper because the filmmakers clearly have more on their minds.
Saw shows all the ambitions of a great thriller -- give Wan and his crew some time and they'll probably make one -- but right now, ambition alone just isn't enough.

 SAW Movie Review
‘SAW’ is a psychological horror thriller created by two Melbournians, James Wan and Leigh Whannell, that was initially a small project for their film studies but evolved into a movie worthy of notice from overseas attention, namely the United States, where it was eventually shot in 18 days.
The premise is pretty much along the lines of a pathological killer up to no good (when aren’t they?), but this movie has some incredible twists to the theme, which makes it unique from other similar genres.
‘SAW’ is one terrifying, disturbing and deeply unsettling movie that will get at the core of your deepest psyche and almost make you too scared to leave the theatre when the credits roll, such is its impact.

Saw is, perhaps, one of the most buzzed about horror pictures of the year.
The movie even becomes more terrifying when we see what this sadistic fiend is capable of through a series of horrific flashbacks that reveal the most twisted methods of death since John Doe's in David Fincher's brilliant Seven.
The whole movie unfolds in a jigsaw puzzle fashion and was quite obviously inspired by The Usual Suspects and the previously mentioned Seven.

Not that I want to hype this movie too much because that can sometimes result in the "kiss of death" but Saw is quite simply the best psychological thriller that I can think of off the top of my head since Se7en.
Saw is basically about a couple of confused dudes, Dr. Larry Gordon (Cary Elwes) and Adam (Leigh Whannell) who wake up to find themselves chained up in a shit-stained bathroom that is seemingly in the middle of nowhere.
I suppose another complaint I might have is that the movie could have benefitted from having about 15 or 20 minutes cut out (it seemed to drag ever so slightly near the end) but that does not stop me from highly recommending Saw whenever it finally hits the theatres.

In James Wan's feature film debut, Saw, we've got another ultra-crafty serial killer on the loose—a guy, or monster, or whatever he is that seems to have found inspiration through the videos of Marilyn Manson and Nine Inch Nails (which makes us think, not so brilliant because that's so very stuck in the '90's).
As they attempt to figure out just what the heck they're going to do, the movie flashes back to before they were captured, weaving together a story about why they're stuck in such a place and who would do such a thing.

While the new sado-masochistic gross-out flick "Saw" often resembles the ghastliest editions yet of "Fear Factor" and "Survivor" and features some of the grodiest direction this side of "Project Greenlight," it does manage at times to knead your tummy like dough, using real suspense for a rolling pin.

SPLICEDwire | "Saw" movie review (2004) "Saw" review, James Wan, Leigh Whannell, Cary Elwes
Many filmmakers waste time with a useless montage or shots of a cityscape, etc. With the new horror film "Saw," we start exactly when the characters do: we suddenly wake up in a bathtub full of water in a dark room with no memory of how we got there.
Whannell and Wan originally meant to shoot "Saw" themselves as a low-budget horror pic before they found funding for an A-list cast, and it's a good thing they waited.
Though it can get grisly at times, and Wan has a predilection for disturbingly fast camera movements during tense moments, this chilling movie is a constantly surprising and extraordinarily tense Halloween treat.
