As of January 1, 2004 population data but counting only the town of Tamamura, the district has an estimated population of 37,556 and a density of 1452 persons per km².
On January 1, 2005 the following towns and villages formerly in the district merged into the expanded city of Isesaki:

Gunma is the northwestern-most prefecture of the Kanto, and is mostly mountainous in the north, with more of the population concentrated in the southern half facing Saitama Prefecture.
On January 1, 2005, the former towns of Akabori and Sakai and former village of Azuma from Sawa District merged into the expanded city of Isesaki.
Gunma's modern industries include transport equipment and electrical equipment, concentrated around Maebashi and the eastern region nearest Tokyo.
