Sawdust - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Sawdust is composed of fine particles of wood.
Perhaps the most interesting application of sawdust is in pykrete, a slow-melting, much stronger ice composed of sawdust and frozen water.
The decomposition of a tree in a forest is similar to the impact of sawdust, but the difference is of scale.

 Sawdust as fuel
All the sawdust we have is from kiln-dried lumber.
The sawdust was green coniferous, and was fed into the furnace at a steep angle in a hopper that held 24 five gallon pails of sawdust.
Sawdust is regularly used as a fuel in many biomass plants, from small heating plants to utilities.

weblife.org: Humanure Handbook: Chapter 8: The Sawdust Toilet
I have the sawdust dumped in a pile in a corner of my backyard adjacent to my compost bins where it can remain exposed to the elements and thereby slowly decompose on its own, as rotting sawdust makes compost more readily than fresh sawdust.
The inside of the bucket should then be dusted with sawdust, the bottom of the empty receptacle should be primed with an inch or two of sawdust, and it's once again ready for use.
Sawdust toilets will work fine, as long as you keep enough buckets handy, as well as adequate cover materials, and some volunteers to manage it all.

Sawdust and wood shavings continue to be popular choices as bedding despite evidence that outbreaks of coliform mastitis within a herd are commonly attributed to contaminated bedding (Bramley, 1985).
