Sawing off of Manhattan Island - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The sawing off of Manhattan Island is an ancient New York City story that is largely unverified.
According to the story, in the 1820s a rumor began circulating among city merchants that southern Manhattan Island was sinking near the Battery due to the weight of the urban district.
It was believed that by cutting the island, towing it out, rotating it 180 degrees, and putting it back in place that Manhattan would be stabilized, and that the thin part of the island could be condemned.

Sawing off Manhattan by Steve Silverman
The best proposal that anyone had at the time was to saw off the end of Manhattan at Kingsbridge, which is located at the northern end of the island.
He then enlisted the support of men to build the giant saws and the twenty-four sweeps needed to “sweep” the island around once it was detached.
Lozier figured that if you were going to saw an island off, then someone would have to be located on the end of the saw that was beneath the water’s surface.

The Sawing Off of Manhattan Island
Already the island had begun to sag, as was plain from the fact that it was all downhill from City Hall, and there were numerous and alarming indications that it might break off and sink into the sea, with apalling losses of life and property.
Lozier and the Mayor had decided therefore that the island must be sawed off at Kingsbridge, at the northern end and turned around, so that the Kingsbridge end would be where the Battery end had been for ages.
The Mayor thought that before Manhattan could be turned around it would be necessary to detach Long Island from its moorings and tow it out of the way, returning it later to its proper place.

Apparently all the new buildings going up around the battery had caused that end of the island to become too heavy, the result being that the entire island was tipping like a see-saw into the ocean.
The men idly contemplated whether it would be possible to correct this problem by sawing the island in half at Kingsbridge, towing the sinking half out to sea, turning it around, and then towing it back and reconnecting it to the secure half.
