	Sawtelle, Los Angeles, California - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		Sawtelle is an area within West Los Angeles, California, that may refer to (1) a district within the City of Los Angeles, (2) an unincorporated area of the County of Los Angeles, or (3) just the Veterans Administration Hospital and former veterans home.
		Sawtelle, a 1.82-square-mile district within the city of Los Angeles, was at one time was an independent municipality, but was consolidated with Los Angeles in 1922.
		Sawtelle was the fourth city to be merged with Los Angeles, after Wilmington and San Pedro in 1909 and Hollywood in 1910.

	Brigadier General Charles G. Sawtelle - Quartermaster General 1896-1897
		In that month Sawtelle was transferred to the West and until the end of April was Chief Quartermaster at Brownsville, Texas.
		Sawtelle continued to serve in the southwest until the fall of 1867, when he was transferred to New York City.
		Sawtelle died on January 4, 1913, at the age of 79, and was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery.

		The district is bordered by Santa Monica on the west, Brentwood on the northwest, the unincorporated Sawtelle VA Complex on the north, Westwood on the northeast, Rancho Park on the east and southeast, and Mar Vista on the south and southeast.
		Since the region was in an unincorporated area (somewhat analogous to East Los Angeles), many Japanese--barred from purchasing land within the boundaries of the City of Los Angeles--settled in the district, establishing many orchards and nurseries in the process.
