Saxon (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Saxon is a British heavy metal band, formed in 1976 in Barnsley, Yorkshire.
Dawson has claimed that the character of Derek Smalls from the spoof-metal band Spinal Tap was strongly influenced by him, particularly his prominent facial hair and his penchant for playing to the gallery by fingering his bass with his left hand while throwing a mano cornuto with his right.
Saxon is currently embarking on the "25th Anniversary of NWOBHM" tour of Germany beginning in early March 2005.

Saxon's reputation as an excellent live act was further augmented by the release of their 1996 live cut 'The Eagle Has Landed II' and interest in the group began to pick up again in Britain.

Saxon is a band that belongs to the original group of artists that comprised the NWOBHM movement in the late 1970s.
They have released album upon album of mediocre music since a rip roaring beginning, causing fans to wonder if there would ever be another Saxon album worth buying.

In the case of "Lionheart", it took more than usual, as at first I thought it was the worst Saxon album in several years (without it being actually bad.) For the past couple of days I've been wondering what the hell I was thinking back then.
Just more proof that sometimes if an album doesn't get you with the first couple of listens, it's worth giving it another try after leaving it alone for a month or two.
Mind you, some people immediately named this one of the best Saxon albums, and one of the top of the year, and I recall calling them either crazy or over-enthusiastic.

Growing up, Saxon was always one of those bands that one had to like.
Decades and various band member changes later, Saxon's Killing Ground is a worthy successor to such ground breaking albums as Strong Arm Of the Law.
The album's intro, loaded with sounds of war, explosions and fear, flows beautifully into the timely, title song "Killing Ground" and the seamless transition from that song to "Court Of The Crimson King" leads one to think that this album will be one long rock anthem.

Saxon started the '90s with "Solid Ball Of Rock" which is exactly what that album was, followed by "Forever Free" in '93.
Saxon started to build a more aggressive, harder sound in the '90's after their more commercial sounding late '80's albums and with Dogs Of War this was most evident.
This was the first Saxon album I had purchased since the 1990 release of "Solid Ball of Rock" (which had me losing interest in Saxon, as that release sounded one dimensional and lacking any emotion).

Saxon's 2004 output is a tight and heavy thing called Lionheart, no fanciness, no copying the past, just well put together classic Heavy Metal delivered with firm precision and strong dedication.

Saxon frontman Biff Byford recently spoke to the U.K.'s long-running magazine Terrorizer about the group's brand-new album, "Lionheart," due on September 20 through SPV Records.
Not only are they among the founders of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal that kick-started a new musical genre in the early 80's, they've also upheld the theme of their native country in their lyrics as well as in their music for some 25 years.
Pretty much the same can be said of every aspect of their new, haunting album, "Lionheart." From their impressive songwriting with its powerful sounds and ambitioned lyrics about witch hunters, King Richard Lionheart and the attitude of British soldiers towards war, to their striking cover artwork, Saxon unequivocally stand by their origins.
