Sayaboury is one of the seven northern provinces of Lao PD. It has a long history dating back 550 years, having been established in 1450 A.D, according to archaeological research in to the main edifice of Sibounheuang temple (where the Great Buddha is located).
Sayaboury district is the political, administrative, economic, culture and social seat of the province.
Sayaboury province has an abundance of natural resources, with deposits of gold, coal, copper, salt, manganese and lignite.

It turns out that Sayaboury is the bit of Laos that lies west of the Mae Khong River, and next to Thailand's Nan Province.
The main item on the menu of all the restaurants as we toured the city center seemed to be noodles, though some had got into the heady realm of Khao Niao, sticky rice, with dips of this and that.

Some LEC church congregations in remote areas of Vientiane, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet, and Sayaboury provinces were not permitted to celebrate Christmas and Easter holidays during the period covered by this report.
In March 2002, authorities in Sayaboury province announced that they had arrested Thongla's uncle as a suspect for the killing; however, the suspect subsequently was released for lack of evidence.
Although police in Sayaboury claimed the killing likely was the result of a family dispute, many members of the religious community doubted this explanation and suspected that the killing was because of the pastor's religious activities.

A three-month study was carried out in the region in order to review innovations in soil conservation and suggest a suitable approach for their diffusion.
To facilitate the process, a co-operation framework between different research/development structures and other actors concerned is proposed, as well as a “learning by doing” approach where farmer facilitators would be in charge of extension.

At the end of November 2002, 7 positive survey forms from Sayaboury and Salavan provinces were sent back to the National University of Laos.
Of these reports the 3 most recent footprint sightings were from Phin B. village in Salavan province in 1998, Nakhangnang village in Sayaboury province in 2000, and Vangsamone village in Sayaboury province in 2002.
In response to the survey reports and the poaching allegation, a mission from the National University of Laos was sent to establish the status of rhinos in Sayaboury province and to visit the villages who reported rhino information.
