In 1905 he joined a religious institute and so came to be known as "Sheikh" Sayed Darwish for the rest of his life.
The anniversary of Darwish's death is usually commemorated in a great ceremony in which Egypt's great writers, poets and thinkers eulogize him for he was rightly called "The people's Musician".
The Alexandria municipality erected two statues of Sayed Darwish and named the greatest stage and street after him.

Sayed Darwish Theatre The Sayed Darwish Theatre was built in 1921 according to plans of French architect Georges Barque who had artfully blended into his design elements from the Vienna State Opera and the Paris Odeon Theatre.
