The scabbard and belts may be heavily tooled on the leather.
I usually make my scabbards over long so that the tip of the sword is not slamming into the tip of the scabbard every time you sheath it.
Alternatively, you could make the scabbard in heavier leather, which is usually my preferred option; that will get you into wet forming the leather, and possibly baking it for hardness.

The safest approach is to continuously and consistently check the sword itself against your scabbard as you build it.
Figure out how the scabbard will be worn; will you attach a belt hook to the back of the scabbard, or a belt loop, or will you extend the back layer up several inches and fold it over to make a belt loop?
You could also flare out the mouth of the scabbard, on both the front and back layers, so you can punch holes through it and string it from a belt that way.
