The thing about Scafell Pike is that you have a choice, you can take the long way up from Borrowdale, Eskdale or Langdale, or you can take the short sharp way up from Wasdale.
We had been able to see the crags of Scafell and Scafell Pike ever since we rounded the corner of the Lingmell ridge, they seemed so close, the fact is they are so big that the distance to them is very misleading, they are a lot further away than you think!
Scafell Pike was the main thing in view, but the full extent of the western fells was seen to good effect.

Scafell Pike is invariably busy and if you want some peace and quiet, wander over the boulders to the south peak, and contemplate the relative peace of Eskdale, way down below (photo) and contemplate the routes to Scafell (photo) for another day.
Climb to the summit - the screes and crags of Great Gable are a fine sight, as is Wasdale Head and its surrounding peaks (photo) - and visit the top of the northwest face for a view down the gullies that split the cliff (photograph of Central Gully).
Return to the Scafell path where you left it and walk down to Esk Hause.

The Scafell path, however, goes right, climbing round the back of Great End into the stony wilderness of Calf Cove.
