  History of Scagliola
The word "scagliola" derives from the Italian scaglia, which means "scales or chips of marble." Although this artificial marble is indistinguishable from the original, it is actually a colored and polished plaster.
Scagliola, therefore, provides a durable surface which is far more permanent and far more realistic in appearance than faux surfaces, usually wood, which are painted to resemble marble.
Scagliola may be seen in some of the finest homes and buildings of the period.

Scagliola (from the Italian scaglia, meaning "chips") is a technique for producing plasterwork columns, sculptures, and other architectural elements that resemble marble.
Batches of pigmented plaster (ground alabaster or gypsum) modified with animal glue are applied to molds, armatures and wall planes in a manner that accurately mimics natural stone and marble.
There are two scagliola techniques: in traditional scagliola coloured batches of plaster of Paris are worked to a stiff, dough-like consistency.

Fireplace Mantels by FRANÇOIS & CO. — stone scagliola
Scagliola is a technique developed by impoverished Italian monks in the 17th Century.
Searching for an economical way to restore their monastery, they discovered that an aggregate of marble chips (Scaglia in Italian), stabilizing agents and pigments could be combined to form a material indistinguishable from the original stone.
Scagliola is a noble, authentic stone product that lends a sense of heritage to each and every design application we offer, from mantelpieces to kitchen hoods, as well as our many architectural accents.
