It is used in many introductory tutorials for teaching a programming language and many students use it as their first programming experience in a language.
A "hello world" program can be a useful sanity test to make sure that a language's compiler, development environment, and run-time environment are correctly installed.
While small test programs existed since the development of programmable computers, the tradition of using the phrase "Hello world!" as the test message was influenced by an example program in the book The C Programming Language, by Brian Kernighan and Dennis Ritchie, published in 1978.

This project has had an unusually long gestation period; within a few days of our first recording with Kronos, we were asked to program for Bjork, and then to tour the world with her as members of her band, which seemed to sweep us out of synch with the equally busy Kronos personnel.
The result is that we have been working on this piece off and on for many years, occasionally editing and re-editing sections and then leaving it pickling underground like kimchi.
For this performance Matthew Curry has programmed software emulations of the Delilah processing system, and we will be manipulating the voice of Winston Churchill, and M. Schmidt.
