Scale armour - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Scale armour (sometimes erroneously called scale mail) consists of many small scales linked together (lamellar), riveted or sewn onto cloth or leather backing (brigandine).
During Roman times scale armour (lorica squamata) was a very popular alternative to mail (lorica hamata) as it offered better protection, especially against blunt damage.
Historically, scales for such armour have been made of leather, bronze, iron, or steel; the use of a given material influenced primarily by the time period, geography, and purpose of the armour.

Ringmail - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is closely related to scale armour, but provides less protection and is more flexible.
There are very few texts that correctly discuss ring armour since they all rely on outdated Victorian scholarship and many confuse ring armour (rings attached to a foundation) with mail (chain mail).
It is generally acknowledged today that virtually all the armour on the Bayeux Tapestry is standard chain mail and not "ring mail" or "trellised mail" or "mascled mail" or any other Victorian construction.

This armour is made from small bone, chitin shaped into plates which are sewn or riveted onto a layer of canvas or leather and protected by an outer layer of cloth.
Hide armour is often stiff and difficult to move in but the level of protection hide armour provides compensates for the loss of maneuverability wearers suffer.
The armour is very protective but it is very uncomfortable to wear in the hot sun and when a giant patrol duty takes them to the near by salt flats extra water needs to be issued.

As a general term, "Armours of Scales" refers to armours constructed of a number of identical small plates (the largest I know of being approximately three by four inches, or seven by nine and a half centimeters) which are visible when the armour is worn (as distinguished from Brigandine, discussed at another page).
While Scale Armour was used by Roman period Judeans, there is no evidence I know of for its use at this, much earlier period.
European scale was generally a waist or hip length cuirass which seems to have been of poncho design, fastened at the sides, though there is some indication that longer ones were used, some with front opening.

Scale armour is so-called because it is made up of rows of overlapping scales, normally of metal but sometimes of horn or rawhide, which are laced or riveted to a canvas or leather backing.
Scale armour is cheap and easily made and maintained, requiring less skill in design than the more advanced lamellar styles.

Thracian armour was characterised by local alterations and conservatism, with some types of armour persisting long afer they ceased to be used elsewhere.
Greek armour was imported into Thrace at least from the sixth century; "bell" corselets have been found, apparently still in use in Thrace in the fifth century when they were obsolete in Greece itself.

Review: Kyosho Pocket Armour Panther A radio controlled model tank
Kyosho don't quote the scale of their Pocket Armour tanks on the Japanese-language page about them here (you can plug the URL into BabelFish for a somewhat hilarious translation), but just going by the measurements, this is about a 1/56th scale model.
Model companies commonly take liberties with scale anyway (there is, for instance, "box scale", in which models are sized to fit in a standard cardboard box...), but given the great enthusiasm among military modellers for creating slice-of-life (or death, as the case may be) dioramas, it may matter to some people.
There's a reason for the odd scale, of course; all of the Pocket Armour tanks use the same drivetrain package, so the models all have to be about the same size.

The bow armour is not unique to the SdKfz 232, however, and should be fitted to almost all SdKfz 231s in service from 1941 on (most early production vehicles had the shield retrofitted).
Roden opted not to include the armour in this kit, but the slots in the front lower hull for locating the braces are still in this kit and must be filled and smoothed (this is also noted in the diagram above).
Aside from filling the radio antenna holes and slots for the supplemental bow armour, I left off the rather clunky brush guards on the hull side and filled in their holes and removed the armoured lip from around the hatch on the front hull (both features were introduced later in the production run).

Scales are stapled with pieces of wire to a horizontal strip of leather that is in turn sewn along the top edge to a leather jerkin.

Ideally, you'd rivet the scales onto leather, but this is armour on the cheap, so I was after some cheapo inflexible fabric instead.
You can then hold the scale in place with your left hand by scrunching up the fabric which doesn't yet have scales on it, and you can sew by putting your right hand underneath the scales already sewn.
Tessalating the scales at seams was really troublesome and required lots of extra trimming etc. I would probably leave the armour open at both sides, simply tying or belting it closed.
