SPACE.com -- Space Colonization: The Quiet Revolution
Large scale space construction tasks are likely to fall into the hands of autonomous robots.
Rice said that the growing business of public space tourism "is really the spirit of colonization." The giggle factor of citizen space travelers is totally gone, he said.
Also the pay-for-a-seat travels to the space station of Dennis Tito and Mark Shuttleworth in past years are milestones along the route, he added.

Space In Miniature - Reference Books for Space Model Builders
My next space project will either be to finish the Mir or possibly a Soyuz landing diorama.
I have a lot of stuff on space history, and I once thought I'd write something on a space enthusiast's view of all of the exploration programs that never got off the drawing board.
This quickly gets into the history of space, as there are few space kits out there and much research is required to come up with the plans and data needed to scratchbuild accurate spacecraft models.

  Image Analysis by Scale-Space Operators
An image is digitally represented as intensity values on a pixel grid spaced at some resolution.
The local derivatives of the image at a given scale have been used for computation of the depth from a pair of stereo images, and also for computation of the local surface orientation and shape.
The future direction of the project is to gain insight into the structural changes of images as scale varies and exploit this especially in the field of medical image analysis.

Particular emphasis is laid on the behaviour of delocalised, missing and false or spurious edges in the scale space.
In particular, the use of a scale space formulation is ideally suited to the fusion of data from several sensors with differing resolutions and spatial coverage (e.g.

However, connections to interim applications of space solar power were tenuous and the space infrastructure requirements were projected to be significant.
The current National Space Transportation Policy as implemented in NASA’s Integrated Space Transportation Plan and Space Launch Initiative, provide a solid strategic and programmatic foundation for achieving launch costs in the range that is projected to be required during the coming 20 years.
Affordable and timely in-space transportation beyond low-Earth orbit is of equal importance to ETO transport for many exploration and development of space goals, such as SSP.

Space Electronics - Moment Weight Scales
Basic Concept of a moment weight scale A turbine blade is mounted on one end of a balance beam and a counterweight which offsets the moment of the holding fixture ("adapter") is mounted on the other side.
Machines manufactured by Space Electronics use crossed-web flexure pivots and force restoration technology, resulting in an instrument which is at least 10 times more accurate than other methods and is also more resistant to damage in a production environment.
This scale measures radial moment and one component of moment at right angles to the radius; a rotary table is built into the machine to permit the blade to be rotated 90 degrees, so the third component of moment can be measured.

What is the "right scale" does indeed depend on the problem, _i.e.}, whether one needs to see the forest, the trees or the leaves.
However, in many modern applications the "right scale" need not be obvious at all, and one really needs a principled mathematical analysis of the scale problem.
In 1983, Witkin proposed that scale could be considered as a continuous parameter, thereby generalizing the existing notion of Gaussian pyramids.

The Space Review: Revising the Torino Scale
The Palermo Scale is a more useful tool based on mathematical comparisons between the threat posed by the impactor and the background threat from similar-sized objects during the period of time in question, but it also rose to unprecedented levels for 2004 MN4 as new tracking data came in.
The most complex scale in consistent use today is the Richter scale for measuring earthquakes, which still requires an occasional reminder that the scale is logarithmic: each whole number increase on the scale means a tenfold increase in the strength of the temblor.
One of the simplifications made in the Torino Scale was the inclusion of both the chance of an impact and the devastation potential of an impact on one axis.

The Case For Solar Power From Space
Nevertheless, component costs are potentially much closer to wholesale utility requirements for space solar power than they are for terrestrial solar, and with continued improvement in prices, in another 10 to 15 years component costs should not be an obstacle to large-scale installation.
Looking at the major cost areas again, for the wholesale utility market space solar power is currently about a factor of 2 too expensive with regard to cost of materials and components, and at least a factor of 10 on the launch cost side.
NASA's Space Launch Initiative at the time was aiming for a 10-fold reduction in costs, and the report recommended close ties between the SSP and SLI programs to allow both to achieve their goals.

Properties of this scale space pattern are investigated and contrasted with those of Gaussian scale space.
A shape smoothing algorithm based on this scale space is proposed to show how the scale space representation could be applied to image analysis.
Specifically, in line with Witkin's scale space filtering, boundary features that are explicitly related across scales by the morphological scale space are organized into global regions and local boundary features.

 Introduction: Scale Space Edge Detection
In order to perform the scale assignment at each pixel, the algorithm computes threshold values for the derivative and second derivative filters at various scales by analyzing the effects of these filters on normally distributed sensor noise.
Since we are interested in minimizing the scale as much as possible, and since smaller scales are more sensitive to noise than larger ones, the choice of critical values is especially important for the lower scales.
As proposed by Elder and Zucker, the minimum reliable scale for estimating the gradient of the edge is defined by the smallest scale at which the edge response exceeds the significance threshold.

Space curves are useful to study since they can effectively and efficiently represent free-form 3-D surfaces and objects.
For example, contours of zero Gaussian or mean curvature on a 3-D surface are space curves invariant under similarity transforms of the surface.
A Torsion Scale Space image is a multi-scale organization of the torsion zero-crossing points of a space curve (or 3-D contour) as it evolves.

The Space Review: Genesis and the future space hotel
Therefore the “space hotel” is the minimum system needed to give the industry a chance to grow beyond just a limited number of hardy adventurers.
A space hotel will be the one place where tourists will be able to relax and enjoy themselves without suffering from the embarrassments and claustrophobia that are inevitable when someone with minimal training flies into orbit in a capsule or small vehicle.
Even though the thickness of the module’s skin is less than half of the skin of a full scale space hotel, putting a window into it is a good way of gaining experience and insuring that the design, especially the seals, are genuinely spaceworthy.

Cosmology: The physical vacuum of space
Since the 1920s physicists have recognized that on a microscopic scale, the vacuum itself is alive with activity.

Einstein stressed, "Space and time are not conditions in which we live, but modes in which we think." Our understanding of space remains in its infancy.
